Tuesday Recap
3 of 4
Groups E-H Final Games
Michael Smith 5-1 Brendan Dolan (F)
Stephen Bunting 5-2 Dean Winstanley (H)
Mervyn King 5-4 Jamie Caven (G)
Christian Kist 5-1 Richie George (E)
Phil Taylor 5-3 Andy Hamilton (E)
Peter Wright 5-3 Simon Whitlock (F)
James Wade 5-1 Tony O'Shea (G)
Gary Anderson 5-0 Wesley Harms (H)
Defending champion Phil Taylor won his final match of the group stages of the 2014 Grand Slam, beating Andy Hamilton 5-3.
The Power has been in sensational form in the past few days and continued his march through the field, finishing with an impressive 106.47 average and hitting better than 55 percent of his finishes. Hamilton certainly didn't disappoint and even briefly led after taking out the fifth leg before Taylor switched gear, hitting two 180s and finishing in style with an 11-darter.
Taylor took to Twitter to let his fans know he's feeling comfortable with his form:
"Delighted with that, another good performance and result against a top player! On to the last 16 now, feeling good! #GSOD."
He faces a difficult second-round matchup against Peter Wright, who beat Simon Whitlock 5-3, knocking the Australian out of the tournament.
Snakebite was deadly effective, taking out 135 with just 40 left on the board for the Wizard in the sixth leg. And while Whitlock fought back and had a chance to force a decider in the eighth, a simple finish on double four did the trick.
James Wade crushed Tony O'Shea 5-1 to secure his spot in the second round, riding a 99.95 average to one of the easier wins of the tournament. With a 62.5 percentage on the checkout, Wade was efficient without being flashy, although the form of Taylor and Michael van Gerwen means he may have to push his average into the triple digits to have any chance of winning the tournament.
Christian Kist gave himself the best chance to qualify by beating Richie George 5-1, as the 28-year-old had to wait for the result of the match between Taylor and Hamilton to know what his fate would be. A win from The Power or a loss no worse than 5-3 would see him through, while a 5-2 win for Hamilton would lead to a nine-dart shootout. Any other result would have led to his elimination.
Luckily for the Dutchman, The Power didn't mail his match in, beating Hamilton to hand Kist a berth in the next round.
Monday Recap
4 of 4
Monday, November 10 (7 p.m.-11 p.m.)
Groups A-D Final Matches
Alan Norris 3-5 Scott Waites (B)
Raymond van Barneveld 5-2 Robert Thornton (D)
Adrian Lewis 5-2 Dave Chisnall (C)
Michael van Gerwen 5-0 Jan Dekker (A)
Kim Huybrechts 5-1 Darren Webster (A)
Keegan Brown 5-3 Rowby-John Rodriguez (C)
Vincent van der Voort 4-5 Robbie Green (D)
Terry Jenkins 5-1 Ronny Huybrechts (B)
Monday's action was dominated by the Dutch as Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld completed their clean sweeps of the group stages.
Van Gerwen was victorious in Group A and beat Jan Dekker to record a 100 percent win record, cruising through the match to win 5-0. He ended with a classy 141 checkout.
Van Barneveld took his place in the next round with a 5-2 victory over Robert Thornton in Group D.
Robbie Green secured his win in dramatic fashion against Vincent van der Voort with a last-gasp 5-4 victory, seeing him through to the next round. Green had led the match 4-1, only for Van der Voort to chase hard and catch his opponent, before surrendering to a close defeat.
Green will now play Dave Chisnall but admitted he thought he might be going out of the competition, per PDC.TV:
"I thought I was going to throw it away and I'm disappointed that I didn't finish the game earlier. I'm absolutely made up to have qualified, and the 170 was a great way to do it—but if I'd missed the bull I might well have messed up my chance.
To win a game like that is fantastic and I'm just grateful that the bull went in. If I feel like I'm playing well and I'm confident then anything can happen, and I can't wait to play Dave Chisnall on Wednesday now.
"
Chisnall won Group C despite losing his last match to a disappointed Adrian Lewis, the former two-time world champion.
Lewis was in a reflective mood after scoring his one and only win of the group stage, per PDC.TV:
"It's really disappointing for me but it was nice to finish with a win. I had two decent performances in my first two games and lost them, and then I won with my lowest average of the week, but that's darts.
"
It's frustrating for me and I've got to take it on the chin, get back on the practice board and get ready for the rest of the year.
Keegan Brown also qualified from Group C and will now face the impressive Van Barneveld.
And order of merit leader Van Gerwen will face off against Group B runner-up Terry Jenkins—a repeat of the recent Europeaan Championship final.
Kim Huybrechts and Alan Norris also qualified from the group stages to make the knockout rounds.
