UFC Fight Night 56 Results: 3 Fights to Make for Ovince Saint Preux
On Saturday night, Ovince Saint Preux squared off against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in the main event of UFC Fight Night 56. In the fastest main event in the UFC since 2005, OSP knocked Shogun out just 34 seconds into the first round.
It was easily the biggest win of OSP's career, and he responded by calling out two fighters ranked below him in the division, Anthony Perosh and Fabio Maldonado.
Those fights aren't too likely to happen, so let's take a look at three solid options for OSP's next fight.
Phil Davis
1 of 3
Phil Davis is currently sitting at No. 5 in the light heavyweight division. Davis last fought in October, when he earned a unanimous decision over Glover Teixeira.
In his last five fights, Davis is 4-1, with his only loss coming against Anthony Johnson back in April.
This fight would be a step back for Davis, but with most of the top of the division already occupied, OSP would represent a solid name to add to his resume.
Meanwhile, a fight with Davis would give OSP a chance to really move up in the rankings, as well as test his grappling against one of the better wrestlers in the division.
Jimi Manuwa
2 of 3Jimi Manuwa was Shogun's original opponent Saturday night, but he was forced to drop out with an injury back on October 29. When that happened, OSP stepped up and took the fight on short notice.
Now that OSP beat Rua, a fight with Manuwa could make sense. Manuwa is 14-1 in his career, and his only loss came in his last fight—against No. 1-ranked Alexander Gustafsson.
Manuwa is a serious finisher, as of his 14 wins, 13 have come by (T)KO, with one coming by submission. OSP is also a finisher and has finished 13 of his 17 wins.
This fight would be a great battle between two guys climbing up the divisional ladder.
Glover Teixeira
3 of 3
Glover Teixeira is currently ranked No. 6 in the division. He had been touted as the next big thing in the light heavyweight division, but he's now lost two fights in a row. The first was a loss in a title fight to Jon Jones, while the second was a unanimous-decision loss to Phil Davis.
Not only is it two decision losses in a row, but he has lost all eight rounds of the fights. Teixeira could use a winnable fight, and OSP represents that while also being a solid opponent.
With OSP's knockout of Rua on Saturday, he has shown that he is a legitimate threat either on the ground or on the feet, and a fight with Teixeira would be a competitive and entertaining bout wherever it goes.
