Bill Simmons Speaks on Mike Golic's Criticism of His LeBron James Comments
Anybody who thought Grantland editor-in-chief Bill Simmons would keep a low profile after a three-week ESPN suspension for comments about NFL commissioner Roger Goodell just received a reminder that's not his style.
The popular columnist took to Twitter for another pointed rant, this time targeting Mike Golic of ESPN's Mike & Mike show, who criticized Simmons' comments about LeBron James.
Simmons started by stating, "I would say I lost respect for that show, but I never had it."
He continued:
Ryan Glasspiegel of The Big Lead passed along the remarks by Golic that sparked Simmons' response. They came after his show played a brief clip of Simmons' original comments on The Herd with Colin Cowherd. Simmons mentioned James' slow start with the Cleveland Cavaliers, which he said reminded him "a tiny bit" of Albert Pujols' struggles with the Los Angeles Angels.
Golic responded:
"I think it's one of the most ridiculous statements I've heard four games into a season in my life in any sport. That's what I'll say about Bill Simmons. So, you know, he grabbed a headline, which is something I know he loves—and that's one of the most ridiculous lines I've ever heard in any sport in my life. Four games into a season. I don't even … that's ridiculous.
"
Golic added, "I put nothing—ZERO—on that."
It's unclear whether he understood the full context of Simmons' comments, which included a lengthy discussion about what he's seen from the NBA's four-time Most Valuable Player since his return to Cleveland.
On Friday, Golic addressed the situation again (per Sports Illustrated). Author James Andrew Miller had more:
ESPN previously suspended Simmons for calling Goodell a "liar" during a podcast while discussing the Ray Rice situation. At the time it stated Simmons failed to meet its "journalistic standards."
The network has yet to comment on Simmons' latest controversy, this one involving a fellow ESPN personality.
