Kansas City Chiefs: Twitter Reaction to Playing in London vs. Detroit

Farzin VousoughianNov 6, 2014

The NFL announced its three games that will be played internationally during the 2015 season, and the Kansas City Chiefs are part of the plan. The Chiefs will host the Detroit Lions in London in Week 8 on Nov. 1, 2015.

This will be Kansas City's first time playing a game across the pond since the NFL began playing games in London in 2007.

In a press release following the announcement, Chiefs President Mark Donovan expressed his excitement that the Chiefs get to represent the NFL and the country on a global stage in London at Wembley Stadium.

"It is an honor for Kansas City to represent the NFL on an international stage," Donovan said. "We are excited for the opportunity this creates for our fans, our city and the global growth of the Chiefs brand."

According to Terez A. Paylor of The Kansas City Star, Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt has served as the chairman for the league's international committee, which decides how to expand the NFL for fans overseas. Hunt has been the chairman since 2011, and there is no doubt that he had a hand in wanting the Chiefs to host a game.

However, not many Chiefs fans are thrilled with the idea of Arrowhead Stadium losing a home game in the regular season.

John Breech of CBSSports.com reported in October that if a team wants to host a Super Bowl, it will be required to sacrifice a home game and play in London.

Is that enough to please Chiefs fans? The media has reacted on Twitter, and not many people are fond of the idea that Chiefs fans in Kansas City only get to see their team play seven home games in the regular season.

ESPN.com's Adam Teicher reminds everyone about what Jackson County taxpayers were forced to go through a few years ago only to see the team give up a home game.

The Kansas City Star's Sam McDowell posed a valid question, wondering how season ticket pricing will be handled.

Herbie Teope of ChiefsDigest.com attended Donovan's press conference on Thursday and confirms season ticket holders will pay for two preseason games and seven regular season games.

Nick Wright, former radio host in Kansas City for 610 Sports Radio and now in Houston, gave his opinion on Hunt.

While most people are talking about money and fans not being able to see their favorite team, Randy Covitz of The Kansas City Star reminds us that the Chiefs players also suffer in a big manner. Let's not forget which stadium is the loudest in the NFL.

Teope tweeted Donovan's answer when asked about fans being upset about losing home field advantage at a loud stadium.

Jenn Bates of KWCH in Wichita, Kansas, shares how much a round-trip plane ticket would cost if a Chiefs fan wanted to attend the game in London.

Surely, the Chiefs are aware of the possible perk of hosting a Super Bowl for going to London, but there may be a different agenda for going to London as Donovan seemed to have hinted.

Now that Chiefs fans are part of the international games for the first time, how do they feel? A couple of them spewed their thoughts.

How do you feel about the Kansas City Chiefs losing a home game? There is a lot to consider. Chiefs fans are incredibly passionate and loud, and not playing in Kansas City gives the Lions a big boost, as Covitz pointed out. Chiefs fans are dealing with this for the first time, so how will season ticket holders be responsible for paying for two preseason games and seven home games?

Either way, not many Chiefs fans are ecstatic about this, unlike the franchise, and rightfully so.
