Alex Ovechkin Becomes All-Time Points Leader for Capitals
Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin became his franchise's all-time points leader upon assisting a Nicklas Backstrom goal in the first period of Tuesday's eventual 4-3 overtime loss to the Calgary Flames, per CSN Washington.
Just two days after matching the record with a four-point performance in a 6-5 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes, Ovechkin wasted no time breaking the tie at 825 points with former Capitals right wing Peter Bondra.
While it perhaps would have been more fitting if he'd set the record with a vicious shot, Ovechkin instead sent a wrister from the point in the general direction of the Flames' net, allowing longtime teammate Backstrom to tip it in with nine minutes and 48 seconds remaining in the opening stanza.

The goal tied the game at 1-1, and Ovechkin would later get a second assist on a second-period goal by Joel Ward that gave the Caps a 3-2 lead.
Of course, the ultimate result was another disappointing loss, two days after the Capitals wasted an early 3-1 lead against the Coyotes.
Ovechkin may have six goals and seven assists through 12 games, but the questions are the same as ever in Washington, where a leaky defense means that very few leads are safe.
In any case, the superstar winger now has a team-record 827 points, though his 428 goals and 399 assists are good for only second place in both categories. Bondra holds the franchise mark of 472 goals, while Michal Pivonka's 418 assists set the standard. Health permitting, Ovechkin figures to take the top spot in both categories either this season or next.
