Chelsea Transfer News: Marco Van Ginkel Quit Threat, Latest on Zakaria Bakkali

Nick AkermanNov 5, 2014

Chelsea are considering the possibility of terminating Marco van Ginkel's loan with AC Milan due to the Dutch midfielder receiving insufficient playing time at the San Siro.

The 21-year-old has played just 33 minutes this season, per WhoScored.com, despite recovering from his early injury with the Italian club. Karel Jansen, the player's agent, recently told FOX Sports (h/t Nick Lustig of the Daily Star) this isn't acceptable:

"

The build-up in the beginning at Milan was good. Marco began the season on the bench and it was expected as he was getting used to a new club and country. But even after he recovered from the injury he has had very little time on the pitch. We were not happy about it and it went against all logic.

We made it clear that this was not intention when he joined on loan. Marco did not have to go to Italy and do nothing. Look, if he wasn't very good, this treatment was understandable but a fit Van Ginkel would walk into the Milan side.

Jansen also confirmed, "Chelsea have not pulled the plug but they might if the current situation continues," per Lustig. Ginkel spent most of last season recovering from injury at Stamford Bridge and is yet to make a significant impression since leaving Vitesse.

He is a well-rounded central midfielder who often leads the way with thumping tackles. Smart in possession and willing to contribute all over the pitch, Van Ginkel needs to regularly face top-level opponents in order to improve.

Milan boss Filippo Inzaghi has proven to have little faith in the player so far, however, making the loan a pointless exercise for all involved. Midfielders including Andrea Poli, Sulley Muntari and Nigel de Jong are currently keeping him out of the team.

Van Ginkel himself identifies as a "box-to-box" player, per Simon Johnson of the London Evening Standard, and he could be useful in a bit-part role for Chelsea. If he's destined to sit on the bench this year, he may as well do so under Jose Mourinho's tutelage. It would be wise to try and find an alternative loan deal for him in the winter, if Chelsea decided to end his spell with the Rossoneri.

Chelsea have to remain wary of breaking UEFA's Financial Fair play rules and are best served to rid the club of unnecessary wages. Ideally, Van Ginkel would receive plenty of time to impress in Italy, allowing the Blues to free up some funds and enjoy a more complete prospect when he returns. This seems unlikely right now.

Mourinho is said to be hunting further reinforcements for his squad, namely young PSV Eindhoven winger Zakaria Bakkali, according to Anthony Chapman of the Daily Express.

The rapid Belgian is out of contract in the summer and will be available to snap up on a free. Chapman believes Chelsea will offer a small sum and send Bakkali back on loan for the remainder of the current season to secure his future in January. The 18-year-old is an extremely skillful and confident player, as noted below:

Chelsea currently sit four points clear of Southampton in the Premier League. Mourinho has the division's most complete squad at his disposal and boasts considerable strength in depth to deal with any fitness problems (such as Didier Drogba replacing Diego Costa and Loic Remy). While the boss believes "it is not possible to remain unbeaten" all season, per Kevin Palmer of the Sunday World, Chelsea certainly have the squad to challenge such a goal.

It is vital Mourinho keeps youth progressing in order to maintain a battle for places, so Van Ginkel must leave Milan if he's not in the team's plans. He has plenty to offer and could benefit from Premier League experience on a weekly basis. Bakkali, on the other hand, would be smart to temporarily remain in the Eredivisie if he does secure a move away.
