Breeders' Cup 2014 Results: Competitors Set Up for Big Showings in 2015

Rob GoldbergNov 4, 2014

The Breeders' Cup is arguably the biggest event in horse racing with some of the largest purses in the world. However, it also works as an indicator for future success.

Many of the young horses that compete at Santa Anita Park go on to have more success in other races, sometimes in various other events at the Breeders' Cup in the future. The trick is finding which ones were fluke winners and which will have sustained success.

Here is a look at some of the top contenders from the weekend that will be in the winner's circle often in the future.

Texas Red

There were a number of top contenders for the Juvenile title, but Texas Red blew them all away with a surprise victory that was one of the most impressive of the day.

After falling behind to 10th place about midway through the run, jockey Kent Desormeaux made an aggressive move to the outside and then blew away the competition with an outstanding final stretch. Jerry Bossert of the New York Daily News provided the official mark of the dominant win:

Despite the 13-1 odds, Texas Red showed that he can be a serious force in the future. David Grening of Daily Racing Form provided a look at the future for the two-year-old horse:

Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated also looked at a true goal for the youngster:

While the Triple Crown season is still a long time away, Texas Red has already made himself into an early contender for at least the Kentucky Derby. Fans who want to place an early bet on the 2015 race might as well start with this one.

Lady Eli

Although there were a few horses with better odds than Lady Eli earlier in the week, enough bettors understood what this horse was capable of that she became the favorite by post time.

In the end, the gamblers won out because Lady Eli separated herself from the field, as shown by TVG:

Andy Serling of NYRA.com was also impressed in what he saw from the two-year-old filly:

Although Fillies Turf is not always among the most popular events to follow across the country, she showed she can dominate the category. With three wins in three starts, it is hard to imagine any less success in the future.

As long as Lady Eli can stay healthy, she should find herself with a lot more wins going forward.

Shared Belief

Bayern won the Breeders' Cup Classic with a dominant performance from start to finish. In all likelihood, he will return to Santa Anita Park a year from now hoping to defend his title.

However, only one horse has ever won the Classic two years in a row, and that came in 2000-01 when Tiznow outlasted the field. The chances of Bayern returning as a champion are not good.

One challenger for Bayern to look out for is the one who entered the race as the favorite: Shared Belief. The three-year-old horse went into the event undefeated in seven starts but was only able to finish in fourth place at this event.

Of course, the finish had a lot to do with the start, which featured contact with Bayern right out of the gate, as Jason Whitlock of ESPN described:

Co-owner and CBS Sports Radio host Jim Rome gave his thoughts after the race:

Meanwhile, he certainly sent a message to the rest of the field, via ESPN's Arash Markazi:

Shared Belief has the talent to win any race and has shown that throughout his career. With a better post position and better start next year, he should have a better chance of winning the big event in 2015.
