Breaking Down the 2014 New York Marathon
The headlines on Monday morning will talk about the performances from men’s winner Wilson Kipsang and women’s winner Mary Keitany. Kipsang finished with a time of 2 hours, 10 minutes and 59 seconds, and Keitany amassed a time of 2:25:07.
Neither runner was able to set a course record as cold temperatures and windy conditions made it difficult. While the two Kenyan runners stole the show with their victories, many fans were just as excited about the celebrities who finished the race.
One of the fastest celebrities on Sunday was four-time Olympic skier Bill Demong. At 34 years old, the Olympic-caliber athlete finished the difficult course in an impressive 2:33:05, but he wasn’t the only celebrity who impressed.
Another notable runner was tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. The 24-year-old athlete finished the event with an impressive time of 3:26:33. What made Wozniacki’s run even more impressive is that this was her first marathon.
When asked about the experience, Wozniacki told the Associated Press, via ESPN.com:
"The crowd was amazing. It was incredible. It was such an incredible experience. I'm so happy to have done this. I'm so proud. Now I have this medal. I can say that I've done the New York City Marathon. I've even done it at a cool time. So I'm really, really happy.
"
Wozniacki was not the only athlete who ran the NYC course, as former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber achieved the feat and finished with a time of 5:14:37.
Athletes weren’t the only celebrities who got in the mix either. Actresses Katrina Bowden (4:16:20) and Teri Hatcher (5:06:42) handled the course, and TODAY Show host Erica Hill finished with a time of 4:47:38.
While the celebrities who ran the race deserve credit for their achievements, the most impressive runner of the day was 39-year-old Sarah Reinertsen.
Her overall time of 6:09:46 is not that impressive on the surface, but she is the first above-the-knee amputee Ironman finisher, according to RunnersWorld.com, and deserves as much credit as those who finished the race with a faster time.
The New York Marathon is a test of a person’s ability to push their body and mind to the limits, but the kindness and gratitude shown by the celebrities raising money for charity is what the true meaning of the sport is all about.
The 2014 New York Marathon was one of the most talked-about races to date, but the biggest winners were those who were able to help make this event special.
