Serena & Venus Williams Top Stats, Highlights from Loss vs. Maya Joint, Hao-Ching Chan at US Open

Serena and Venus Williams weren't able defeat Maya Joint and Hao-Ching Chan despite a valiant effort at the 2026 US Open on Friday, suffering a 3-6, 7-6(6), 6-7(7) loss in their first-round women's doubles match.

It marked the first US Open doubles match for the Williams sisters since 2022.

Chan and Joint gained the upper hand early, winning three of the first four games in the opening set.

While Serena and Venus responded with a break and appeared to start getting more comfortable as the match continued, they still weren't able to take the first set.

The sisters fared much better in the second set, holding serve in the first game before gaining a 5-4 edge. They were still unable to convert break point opportunities against Chan and Joint, resulting in a tiebreaker.

While Serena and Venus won the first two points and later held a 6-4 advantage in the tiebreaker, a long forehand from Venus and a double fault from Serena resulted in a 6-6 score.

Still, the sisters were able to force a pair of mistakes by Joint in order to stay alive and secure a third set.

Chan and Joint took control of the third set early, gaining a 4-1 lead that was highlighted by a long backhand from Serena on break point in the fourth game.

The Williams sisters quickly got back on track, winning three straight games and bringing the score to 4-4.

Both duos held serve over the next four games, setting up a 10-point tiebreaker for the match.

Serena and Venus jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the tiebreaker, although Chan and Joint won eight of the next nine points to move back in front.

The Williams sisters struggled with self-inflicted issues during the match, as they finished with 26 unforced errors compared to 15 for Chan and Joint.

Still, it was an admirable performance from the 46-year-old Venus and the 44-year-old Serena.

The sisters have already established themselves as a legendary duo, winning 14 Grand Slam women's doubles titles together and boasting a perfect 14-0 record in Grand Slam doubles finals.
