Breeders' Cup 2014 Results: Weekend Winners and Prize Money Info

Nate LoopNov 3, 2014

The 2014 Breeders' Cup packed 13 races into the span of two days at the gorgeous Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. The lucrative event, with million-dollar purses handed out like Halloween candy, brought together horses of all types for a full range of competition.

Bayern won the Classic, the final and most lucrative race of the weekend, in awe-inspiring and controversial fashion. The thoroughbred beat out the likes of California Chrome—winner of two legs of the 2014 Triple Crown—and Shared Belief, a colt undefeated in his first seven starts.

It was a truly amazing race, but Bayern isn't the only horse of note from the weekend.

Here is the full list of winners from all 13 Breeders' Cup races, along with total purses for each race and prize money payouts for the winners.

Classic Recap

The Classic was supposed to be a two-horse race between California Chrome and Shared Belief, but Bayern crashed the party right out of the gate. Bayern, commandeered by jockey Martin Garcia, veered left out of the starting gate and collided with Shared Belief and V.E. Day.

Garcia and his steed appeared relatively unfazed by the contact and quickly raced out to the lead. Toast of New York, Cigar Street and California Chrome stayed right on Bayern's heels for much of the race, while Shared Belief disappeared into the middle of the pack.

Bayern kept up an astounding pace, and it looked like a comfortable victory was in order. Yet, things would get crazy on the home stretch, as Toast of New York and California Chrome made powerful late breaks and pushed Bayern right to the finish line.

However, Garcia would get every bit of energy out of his horse, and Bayern would hold on for the wire-to-wire win.

Of course, the victory was in doubt with the official inquiry regarding the beginning of the race. The stewards would uphold the decision, securing the win for Bayern. Shared Belief would finish in fourth place.

Scott Chaney, one of the Santa Anita stewards, explained the decision to Eric Sondheimer of the Los Angeles Times:

"

Chaney said no claims of foul were lodged by the jockeys. Chaney said after conferring with Martin Garcia and Mike Smith, the riders of Bayern and Shared Belief, and watching video of the incident, the stewards agreed 'in our determination it didn't happen in the point of a race where it was reasonable to speculate that they didn't finish in a position where they were reasonably expected to finish, which is the language of the rule.'

"

Ray Paulick of PaulickReport.com felt the decision was perhaps irresponsible:

Mike Smith, the legendary jockey riding atop Shared Belief, stated after the race that the bump was indeed consequential.

"I think it cost me the race," he said, via Sondheimer.

It's difficult to determine whether or not the race will affect voters' opinions when it comes to picking a Horse of the Year.

Bayern, along with California Chrome, is certainly a deserving candidate with a win in the most lucrative race of the year, but the controversial ending may well be debated for quite some time and throw the legitimacy of his legacy into question.

Other Notable Performances

Rosie Napravnik

The 26-year-old jockey Rosie Napravnik rode Untapable, a beautiful filly, to a win in the 2014 Longines Distaff race. The wondrous run was Untapable's sixth win of 2014 and eighth of the filly's career. The win was a special one for Napravnik, as she announced after the race that she is pregnant and retiring from riding, per Frank Angst of The Blood-Horse (h/t ESPN.com):

"

I've been planning my retirement since I found out that I was pregnant; I'm seven weeks pregnant. Joe and I decided this summer to stop trying not to have children, and we didn't know whether it would take a month or a year. It didn't take very long. So it wasn't completely unexpected, and when I found out and I worked out the timing, I said, 'I'll be seven weeks at Breeders' Cup? Perfect.'

"

The surprising announcement is a truly special way to go out for a well-respected jockey. Although many would presumably like to see Napravnik continue her stellar career, she went out on a high note on a fine filly at one of horse racing's most prestigious competitions. There are few more elegant ways to make an exit.

Take Charge Brandi

Take Charge Brandi, a two-year-old filly with just one win in five career starts heading into the Breeders' Cup, shocked everyone by winning the 14 Hands Winery Juvenile Fillies in a race where most probably expected the horse's team to be happy with a "thanks for playing" and little else. Daily Racing Form relayed the extremely long odds on Take Charge Brandi heading into the race:

Surprises like that are a wonderful reminder of all that is possible at the Breeders' Cup, which attracts horses, jockeys and owners from all over the world. Indeed, a win at the Breeders' Cup can be the launching pad for a career, or the culmination of countless hours of hard work.
