New York Marathon Results 2014: Final Times and Post-Race Reaction

R. Cory SmithNov 2, 2014

In one of the most highly anticipated events of the year, runners braved rough conditions to complete the New York Marathon on Sunday.

The big winner on the men's side was Kenyan Wilson Kipsang with a time of two hours, 10 minutes and 59 seconds. On the women's side, Mary Keitany of Kenya surged past Jemima Sumgong with a time of 2:25:07.

Both Kipsang and Keitany narrowly escaped with wins but still stole the spotlight in the historic marathon. Each ran next to their closest competitor throughout the morning and captured the title by closing out strong.

Post-Race Reaction

As difficult as the weather was for the runners, Kipsang remained a steady force en route to yet another marathon win. The Kenyan has been dominant throughout his career and made history on Sunday with the win.

The victory on Sunday clinched the London Marathon, Berlin Marathon and New York Marathon, making Kipsang the first man to win all three during his career. The official Twitter of the New York Marathon shared the photo of the finish and the record for Kipsang:

Coming in as one of the favorites in the event, Kipsang paced the field yet again to take the premier race. Even with the blustering winds, the 32-year-old's historic run was the biggest headline on Sunday.

Following his performance, Kipsang's official site provided comments from the runner:

"

I'm very happy. There was so much wind. A very tactical race without pacemakers. So I had to have a lot of patience....I love New York. I was so happy that I got invited back after the cancellation two years ago due to hurricane Sandy.

I sprinted very much in the last 200 meter, I saved energy for that. That's why I won.

"

On the women's side, it was all Keitany down the final stretch of the race. Though she and Sumgong traded off positions throughout the day, it was Keitany that separated herself late to finish three seconds ahead of her competition.

The final time of under two and a half hours would be great for any competitor, but Keitany's time was even more special. After falling to third in the 2011 New York Marathon, Keitany hasn't raced since 2012 following the birth of her second child.

NBC New York noted the momentous occasion for the female runner:

Outside of those looking to compete for a win on Sunday, thousands of other runners were in attendance to simply complete the event. One of those runners was tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, who finished with a strong time of her own.

The marathon's official account and Wozniacki chronicled her run on Sunday:

All in all, the entire event was a success for the runners and everyone in attendance. Despite the cold temperature and insane competition in the field, both Kipsang and Keitany came away with memorable wins.

With the Big Six marathons coming to an end, the Tokyo Marathon will be next on the schedule on Feb. 22, 2014. Both Kipsang and Keitany will look to repeat next season, with each striving to make more history in New York City.
