Atletico boasts plenty of talent up front, particularly in the form of physical pairing Mario Mandzukic and Raul Garcia. Yet the real danger man might be Antoine Griezmann.
The flying French wide forward scored a brace in the win over Cordoba, his first La Liga goals for Ateltico since signing from Real Sociedad this summer. That it took him so long to find the net in the league is something of a mystery.
Griezmann is a terrific talent and it's still surprising that Madrid didn't face more competition for his signature during the summer. Griezmann's greatest strength is his movement. He expertly times his runs from the flanks and every move he makes is a direct one designed to put him in a scoring position.
Of course, Malmo already know about Griezmann's threat, since he scored in the first meeting. Simeone has lavished praise on the 23-year-old's recent efforts, per AS reporter F.J. Diaz:
"He’s been working well and this growth is a result of the hard work he puts in each day at training. He played a great game and not just because he scored twice. He showcased so many examples of the type of game we’ve been anticipating from him for a while.
"
Griezmann is now part of a revamped attack since Madrid sold talismanic striker Diego Costa to Chelsea this summer. Aside from the power of Mandzukic, Simeone now has more fluidity and pace thanks to both Griezmann and ex-Torino star Alessio Cerci.
Expect this pair to cause a host of problems for an overwhelmed Malmo defence.
However, Malmo boss Age Hareide seems more concerned with what his own team will do in forward areas. The Norwegian has promised an attacking brand of play, while also reminding Atletico how tough his team is on home soil, per Spanish publication Marca (h/t Sky Sports):
"Well, if Juventus beat Olympiacos we'll still be in the running, but first we have to do the business against Atletico.
We can beat anyone at home; we haven't lost (at home) in Europe for three years. We haven't conceded in continental competition at the Malmo New Stadium for eight games. Our fans really get behind us.
"
Central to Hareide's bold approach will be the play of veteran forward Markus Rosenberg. The versatile 32-year-old, who often operates just off the front, has bagged 17 goals in domestic and Champions League action this term, per WhoScored.com.
Rosenberg, a one-time West Bromwich Albion flop who has thrived since returning home, netted both of Malmo's goals in the club's 2-0 group win over Olympiakos earlier in the competition.
He's certainly the man the Atleti defence must be wary of.
Prediction: Malmo 1-3 Atletico Madrid
The Swedish team are usually more resilient at home. They may cause Atletico some initial nerves, but once Griezmann and company settle, Madrid will be comfortable.
