Black Cats Claw Maximum Points from Selhurst Park

Sunderland travelled to south London for this week's Monday night fixture, where Crystal Palace were unable to prevent the Black Cats from claiming their first win in three matches, Gus Poyet's men prevailing 3-1.

The visitors opened the scoring after Steven Fletcher sent a Patrick van Aanholt cross past Julian Speroni in the 31st minute. However, as Monday Night Football shows, Van Aanholt's day would turn sour after he injured himself in the process of challenging Wilfried Zaha:

BBC Sport confirms the Dutchman is suspected to have dislocated his shoulder in the tackle attempt: "Sunderland's Patrick van Aanholt was taken to hospital after suffering a suspected dislocated shoulder during their match at Crystal Palace. Van Aanholt was injured during the first half at Selhurst Park as he tried to tackle Palace's Wilfried Zaha."

Wes Brown came on as Van Aanholt's replacement and made his most memorable contribution by diverting the ball into his own net on 55 minutes, ESPN FC detailing Sunderland's unfortunate own-goal record over the past year:

The visitors left it late but managed to seal the three points in the final 15 minutes when Jordi Gomez slammed the ball in from outside the area, Fletcher following up in stoppage time to bag maximum points.

The result gives Poyet's side their first away victory of the Premier League season in a time when they were desperate for a boost in confidence, having fallen 8-0 to Southampton just a fortnight ago.

The northeast side climb into 14th place while Neil Warnock's men drop to 17th, level on points with Leicester City in 18th and having now failed to win since their beating of the Foxes in September.

Sunday Recap

The Manchester derby sat as the jewel in the crown of this weekend's Premier League action, and title holders City managed a deserved 1-0 victory over rivals United on Sunday.

It's the Citizens' fourth straight win over the Red Devils, a result which was aided by the sending off of Chris Smalling, who picked up two avoidable yellow cards, as shown by Football Vines:

Sergio Aguero guided home the game's only goal with 30 minutes left in the fixture, but City may well feel they deserved more after Michael Oliver failed to award several significant penalty appeals from the hosts.

Speaking after an intense win, Manuel Pellegrini praise his team but insisted on asking more, noting that there was a drop in conviction after Aguero netted the opener, per the club's official website:

"

The most important thing is to win the derby. We played well up until we scored the goal, but not as well after. This can happen in games of this intensity. We lost our way a little and stopped pressurising United when they had the ball, but the bottom line is that we have beaten a very good side with very good players so I am happy with the victory.

"

This was City's first win in three after losing two games on the trot, and Tottenham managed an identical surge back to winning ways, beating Aston Villa 2-1 on Sunday.

Spurs had not won a Premier League fixture since early October, but after Christian Benteke was sent off for pushing Ryan Mason in the face, as shown by Bleacher Report UK, the visitors were allowed back into the fixture:

Andreas Weimann scored the fixture's first goal inside 16 minutes, and Paul Lambert will be upset that Spurs were able to score twice in the final seven minutes to earn maximum points.

Nacer Chadli equalised before Harry Kane's 90th-minute winner gave the travelling fans a more pleasant trip home, OptaJoe illustrating the former's transformation under Pochettino:

Saturday Recap

Mario Balotelli scored in the midweek League Cup win over Swansea City to alleviate some of the pressure on his shoulders, but Liverpool's leading man couldn't make any difference in Saturday's early loss to Newcastle.

Brendan Rodgers' men fell victim to an Ayoze Perez winner 17 minutes from full time that leaves the club sitting seventh in the table with a neutral goal difference after 10 games.

There were appeals for some of the Magpies players to be punished more severely during what was a very physical encounter, ESPN's James Tyler positing visuals of Daryl Janmaat's particularly tough tackle on Balotelli:

However, one would be just in suggesting Liverpool didn't deserve the win regardless of those calls, and finishing among the top four is once again looking tough, never mind maintaining last season's top-two status.

The same can't be said for Arsenal and Chelsea, however, each of whom rode their challenges to earn three points this weekend, beating Burnley and QPR, respectively.

Alexis Sanchez netted a brace against Sean Dyche's side to once again add value to his summer acquisition, and per 101GreatGoals, the former Barcelona man was clearly pleased with his contributions:

If Sanchez was the talisman to pick out at the Emirates Stadium, Chelsea raised several, with the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Oscar and Eden Hazard all pleasing boss Jose Mourinho in their tetchy 2-1 win over the Hoops.

Charlie Austin equalised after Oscar's first-half opener, but Hazard's second-half penalty secured maximum points. However, speaking to talkSPORT after the game, Mourinho demanded more of Stamford Bridge, describing the west London ground as "like playing in an empty stadium":

"

Everyone knows how much I feel connected to this club and the fans. At this moment it’s difficult for us to play at home though, because playing here is like playing in an empty stadium.

The team then starts playing like it’s a quiet, soft game at home. It’s difficult to get that strong start where the players, team and fans at Stamford Bridge [are all together]. I was today looking around and it was empty, but not in terms of people because it was obviously full. That’s what frustrating.

"

Blues fans aren't likely to take the constructive criticism lightly, but the best response from their point of view would be to prove the boss wrong by bringing a more raucous reply in raising the decibels.

Southampton and West Bromwich Albion also came through on the right side of 1-0 scorelines, each triumphing in away territory against Hull City and Leicester City, respectively.

Victor Wanyama doesn't score often, but as Bleacher Report UK shows, the Kenyan was on hand to provide a delightfully timed winner against the Tigers:

The Saints' win extends their record to seven wins from 10 games this season, which keeps them in second, while the Baggies move from 12th into the top half, Esteban Cambiasso's own goal giving them a first win of the season since late September.

Meanwhile, Everton drew 0-0 at home to Swansea City, a result which—for now—keeps both sides in the top half. Stoke City earned a 2-2 draw against West Ham United, where Stewart Downing kept up his strong form to score one goal and assist another for Sam Allardyce's side.
