WWE Night of Champions: An Outsiders View

David WyattJul 27, 2009

Let me just preface this article by saying that I have not watched a wrestling event in it's entirety since the days of the Ministry and the Corporation, since the Rock and HHH were head to head, the Undertaker was pretty scary, and there were more characters than a Shakespearean play.

However, last night with the option of watching either the "Night Of Champions" or the Detroit Tigers vs. Chicago White Sox game, I thought that I would give wrestling a little view, to compare it to what it was like when I used to watch it.

I had heard people say that it was for kids, with all the fake injuries and such, but for me it's just physical theatre. As long as you treat it for what it is, and don't mind the obvious fake punching, (yes I'm looking at you John Cena) then entertainment is what you will get.

In terms of wrestling quality, I did think that it has taken a slight slide. However there were some impressive guys on show, Randy Orton is very sound fundamentally, and one guy that I had never heard of really impressed me, Dolph Ziggler.

The crowd got into it, apart from the WWE Divas Championship match which was almost silent. The only sound was the screaming of the women, one could be forgiven for presuming that they were watching a female tennis match.

The best match of the night for me personally was the triple threat Randy Orton vs. HHH vs. John Cena, although I was told by a friend that the Randy Orton vs. HHH thing has been done to death, and that they really should move on with another storyline.

On a night where I saw some questionable finishers, Rey Mysterio's was just not very impressive at all for me, a kick to the face and a body press, 99 percent of wrestlers kick out of similar moves during the match. CM Punk's was unimpressive, and doesn't have the electricity as the Rock's "Peoples Elbow", HHH's "Pedigree", or Kurt Angle's "Angle Slam". However the RKO performed by Orton on John Cena was excellent.

Cena really sold the move like the Rock used to sell the Stone Cold Stunner, it has the electricity, the unexpected quick fire movement that gets people on their feet cheering. Before I knew it, Randy Orton was a favorite of mine, despite the fact that I hear he's one of the biggest heels in the business. Then again, sometimes they make it.

All in all, I enjoyed my new experience of the WWE (that was new for me as well, when I left the sport it was WWF). I thought that the majority of the matches had some appeal.

I didn't enjoy the two women's matches, but I was told that it was a one off based on the event. Kingston was an exciting talent, Jeff Hardy was always one of my favorite guys with his TLC matches against the Dudley Boys, so it was nice to at least see one familiar face.

Based on last night, I think that I will watch a few more wrestling events, I hope that the story lines are as good as they used to be, like Undertaker and the Ministry setting fire to crosses outside Vince McMahon's house and Stone Cold blowing up the DX bus.
