California Chrome vs. Shared Belief

Though the Classic is far from a two-horse duel, as we will soon discuss, these two have rightly earned the top billing. Between the two of them, California Chrome and Shared Belief have combined to win six Grade 1 stakes races and three races at Santa Anita.

Some of the shine has worn off Chrome since he captured the nation's heart this past spring. After a lengthy break following his fourth-place finish at the Belmont Stakes, Chrome came in sixth at the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby, a disturbing showing considering the step up in competition he will face on Saturday. However, Chrome has received rave reviews for his pre-race workouts, suggesting that he may be returning to form.

Nevertheless, Shared Belief may very well have been the Kentucky Derby favorite last spring had he not been injured. Now healthy, the gelding has appeared impressive in the lead up to the race, even though his first gallop around the track did not come until Thursday morning:

Unlike Chrome, Shared Belief has already showed results in rebounding from his layoff, winning two Grade 1 races in the past 10 weeks. Thus, while Chrome will receive much of the attention due to his name recognition, Shared Belief represents the rightful favorite.

A Bevy of Dark Horses

Nevertheless, there is a very real possibility that neither Chrome nor Shared Belief sniffs the victory. That is because the Classic field is loaded this year, with a host of multiple graded winners in the field.

Tonalist is the name many fans will remember, as the Belmont champion followed up with another win at the New York track in his most recent race, the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes on Sep. 27. It's interesting that Tonalist has not trained at Santa Anita, but those near him express confidence in his form:

Elsewhere, Bayern and Moreno also stand near the top of the list of favorites. Apart from an ugly 10th-place finish at the Travers Stakes in August, Bayern has been excellent, winning three of his last four races, including the Pennsylvania Derby that Chrome floundered in.

Moreno is arguably the top four-year-old in the field. Though he has lost his past two races, he also has demonstrated remarkably consistency, with nine top-three finishes in his past 12 starts. Thus, expect him to remain near the top of the field down the stretch.

Ultimately, most of these horses have been favored in the majority of their career starts. Now facing similarly top-tier competition, the Classic will provide the most definitive look yet at which horse is the best thoroughbred in the world.
