T.O. Campaigns For Vick, Herm Edwards Says Saints "Best Fit"

Randy SavoieJul 27, 2009

It should come as no surprise that Terrell Owens felt compelled to weigh in on the NFL's hottest topic as the Buffalo Bills opened training camp this weekend.

As ESPN reported that Michael Vick is likely to receive a conditional reinstatement from the NFL that will include between a two and six-week suspension to start the season, T.O., a man who is no stranger to controversy himself, spoke freely with reporters about the ongoing Vick saga that has sports talk radio and Internet chat boards buzzing.

Asked about the possibility of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell imposing an additional suspension on the former Atlanta Falcon quarterback, Owens said, "I think it's unfortunate. I think the way the commissioner has handled it, I think is unfair to Michael Vick. I think he's done the time for what he's done. I don't think it's really fair for him to be suspended four more games. That's almost like kicking a dead horse on the ground."

"I think a lot of guys around the league need to speak up. I think the players union needs to step in. The guy's already suffered so much. To add a four-game suspension on a two-year prison sentence, I mean that's ridiculous."

Owens adds he is confident that Vick will get a second chance. "There is a number of guys around the league that have done far more worse things than that (including T.O. himself) and got second chances. Michael Vick is a guy who really hasn't had any character issues besides (the one) that he got the prison sentence for, so why not?"

Former Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Herman Edwards told ESPN Radio this morning that he believes that the two best fits for Vick are Jacksonville and New Orleans.

He believes that the time Vick has spent recently with former Indianapolis Head Coach Tony Dungy will have make an indelible mark on Vick's character. Edwards added that Vick will never be the "conventional type."

"As a coach, he's likely to have you yelling No! No! No! then Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! when he turns a broken play into a remarkable one with his powerful arm and dazzling feet."

And so the time has come for the Saints front office to move.

Later in the week, the team should call a press conference at the Louisiana SPCA to announce the signing of Vick. He should don a Saints cap presented to him by Tom Benson, graciously smile, shake hands with the Executive Directors of SPCA and PETA, sign the contract, read from a carefully prepared statement written by the Saints PR Department, drop back, scramble forward, fire a beautiful 50-yard tight spiral on the run to Rover who makes a leaping catch in mid-air, high-five the animal, present him with a ceremonial treat, and officially adopt him in front of admiring reporters.

If Vick lacked ability, I, myself, would write a thoughtful, visceral piece on why Vick's crimes should preclude him from ever playing in the league again.

"Melvin the Janitor would never get a second chance!" I would say.

"How dare they give this reprobate another opportunity! How dare they!"

However, because I am a man of little or no conviction these days and recognize the Saints desperate need for a legitimate backup QB, I join T.O. in saying "Enough Already!"

The time has come for Michael Vick to return.

Preferably in a black-n-gold uniform.
