Chelsea will travel to Pride Park in the fifth round of the Capital One Cup after they were drawn against Derby County on Wednesday. Both are top of their respective leagues currently, so it should be a high-quality encounter.

Liverpool also have to travel for their last-eight match, with the Championship's high-flying Bournemouth their opponents.

Sheffield United will also host Southampton while the only all-Premier League tie sees Newcastle visit Tottenham with all the ties set to take place in the week commencing on December 15, per James Orr of The Independent.

Chelsea must be seen as favourites to win the competition eventually but they only just struggled through to the last eight against Shrewsbury on Tuesday.

The Premier League leaders had to rely on a Jermaine Grandison own-goal late on to claim their 2-1 win, and boss Jose Mourinho was unimpressed with the team of fringe players he put out, per BBC Sport.

"I expect people that have not been playing a lot to raise their level and create problems," said Mourinho. "I love problems of choice, but it's easy to choose my team for Saturday."

It may well be that the Portuguese manager opts to play more of his higher-profile players in the fifth round as the Blues look to reach the final four of the League Cup.

Conversely, Alan Pardew can be confident in playing his second-string team, which surprised many by dispatching defending champions Manchester City with relative ease at the Eithad, per The Telegraph's Mark Ogden:

The Magpies' 2-0 win over the holders came very much against the odds but put Newcastle in a fine position to make a decent cup run this season with only three rounds remaining.

Sheffield United are the lowest-ranked side left in the competition as the only League One team. The South Yorkshire outfit came through against MK Dons in the fourth round courtesy of two late Michael Higdon goals, to the joy of manager Nigel Clough, per the club's Twitter feed:

Bournemouth will be taking part in their first-ever League Cup quarter-final after beating the Premier League's West Brom 2-1 on Tuesday.

Liverpool will be hoping to keep their run to the final going as Mario Balotelli's form came good for the Reds on Tuesday. The out-of-form Italian striker finally bagged an Anfield goal to see Brendan Rodgers' side through to the last eight.

Tottenham won the competition back in 2008 with a victory over Chelsea in the final and marched onto the quarter-finals this year with a 2-0 home win over Brighton.

Meanwhile, Southampton's season gets better and better in the Premier League and their form continues in the League Cup with Ronald Koeman's side surely eager to kick on towards a trophy in a fine term so far.

Newcastle, Saints and Spurs must see themselves as realistic silverware winners in the League Cup this season having made it as far as the fifth round, while Liverpool and Chelsea have the most quality of the sides left in the competition.

Eight will become four in December as the remaining teams head into the two-legged semi-finals but, after Wednesday's draw, it is difficult to predict who will still be standing in the competition in the new year.
