Jamie McMurray Is the Odd Man Out at Roush Fenway
Geoff Smith, team president for Roush Fenway, has made it clear that Jamie McMurray, whose contract expires at the end of the season, is free to begin seeking employment with other teams.
Crown Royal, which sponsors a few races for McMurray, would most likely move over to the No. 17 team of Matt Kenseth.
Roush Fenway, who was notified by DeWalt earlier in the week, said that they would be leaving the team at the end of the season.
McMurray can stay on board and move over to Yates Racing, since NASCAR has already mandated that Roush Fenway downsize to only four teams.
But Smith also said that securing a sponsorship deal for a “B” team would not be that easy, especially with how difficult it is to secure sponsorship.
"We took a risk on losing Jamie when we made the decision not to re-sign him.
"It's been clear he's free to look around even though we've told him we want him. It's just hard to do right now.''
So just how marketable is McMurray? He has only two race wins, 77 top tens, and has yet to make the chase while in his seventh season racing in the cup series.
Smith also went on to say that it doesn’t make sense to sign McMurray without a sponsor commitment, especially if it were for a long term deal.
Unlike UPS who is committed to Ragan and Roush Fenway.
It has also been reported that Earnhardt Ganassi Racing is already seeking McMurray to take over for Martin Truex Jr, who will be leaving at the end of the season.
Roush Fenway still has plans to keep at least seven drivers for next season, and if possible adding an eighth one.
