Winners and Losers from Bundesliga Week 9

Mark LovellNov 2, 2014

The Bundesliga big guns weighed in at the weekend with Bayern Munich hosting rivals Borussia Dortmund.

Boasting 10 World Cup winners and broadcast in 208 of 209 of FIFA's member countries, the Bundesliga's showcase event did not disappoint. Only North Korea decided it could do without the pleasure of the so-called "Klassiker" between Bayern and BVB.

The unbeaten Bavarians came from behind to prevail against Dortmund at home in the league for the first time since February 2010.

Borussia Monchengladbach are now the only other undefeated side, while lowly Freiburg and Bremen recorded surprise away wins.

Find out more winners and losers from Week 9, when Jurgen Klopp's beleaguered side continue their slide down the table.

Losers: Borussia Dortmund

1 of 11

Football is a game of fine margins.

Borussia Dortmund were leading 1-0 and looking very comfortable with skipper Mats Hummels superbly marshalling his side up to the interval against leaders Bayern Munich.

Cue another injury with Hummels, who had to come off at half-time and was replaced by Neven Subotic.

And it was a botched Subotic clearance that fell straight to Robert Lewandowski, who didn't need a second invitation to fire home the equaliser. The Serbian defender compounded his error by hauling down Ribery to gift Bayern a penalty with five minutes to play, meaning Dortmund were downed again.

Winners: Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg cruised into second on goal difference with a crushing 4-0 win at struggling Stuttgart.

Ivan Perisic fired a goal in each half, with Robin Knoche and Kevin De Bruyne also getting on the scoresheet.

The Wolves are Bayern's nearest challengers after a fifth Bundesliga win on the trot.

Winner: Arjen Robben

3 of 11

Arjen Robben loves playing against Borussia Dortmund.

The Dutchman's decisive penalty in the 2-1 victory was his sixth goal in his last six outings against Jurgen Klopp's charges.

The winger fired the last-gasp winner in the 2013 Champions League final at Wembley and also opened the scoring in this year’s German Cup final success in Berlin.

This season, Bayern have won all nine games with reliant Robben in the line-up.

Borussia Monchengladbach went marching on as coach Lucien Favre celebrated his 57th birthday.

Andre Hahn's opener and a brace from Patrick Hermann stretched Gladbach's undefeated run to 17 games—equalling a club record going all the way back to 1970-71.

The Foals remain four points behind Bayern in third place thanks to the comfortable 3-1 win.

Loser: Jurgen Klopp

5 of 11

As much as though it pains me to do so, Jurgen Klopp has to be included after an horrific run of domestic form.

Five league defeats in a row tells its own sorry tale, and his Borussia Dortmund side are now sitting just one place off the bottom of the Bundesliga.

Things must get better.

Winner: Robert Lewandowski

6 of 11

It was perhaps inevitable that Robert Lewandowski would score against his former club in his first league meeting against Dortmund since his free transfer move to Bayern in the summer.

The Polish striker fired a precious equaliser as Bayern came from behind to plunge BVB deeper into the relegation mire.

Winner: Roman Weidenfeller

7 of 11

Germany's second-choice 'keeper Roman Weidenfeller kept Bayern at bay for long periods during Dortmund's game in Munich.

Weidenfeller pulled off a string of fine saves as struggling Dortmund clung on to Marco Reus' first-half header.

All Weidenfeller's work proved to be in vain as Dortmund slipped to a fifth league defeat on the trot.

Winners: Freiburg

8 of 11

Freiburg grabbed a vital first win of the season in Cologne on Sunday.

Czech Republic international Vladimir Darida's 50th-minute penalty proved enough for Freiburg to move above Borussia Dortmund into 16th place in the table.

Winners: Franco Di Santo and Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen still languish at the foot of the Bundesliga, but at least the four-time champions can cherish a first win of the season under new Ukrainian trainer Viktor Skripnik.

Former Chelsea striker Franco Di Santo fired a brace as Bremen came from a goal down to beat previously Mainz 2-1.

The thrice-capped Argentina international is now joint top scorer in the league with six goals.

Loser: Mario Gotze

10 of 11

Mario Gotze had a game to forget against his former club, Dortmund, on Saturday.

"Super Mario" was ineffective throughout and made way for Franck Ribery with 20 minutes to play as Bayern went in search of an equaliser.

Winner: Franck Ribery

11 of 11

Substitute Franck Ribery sparked Bayern's fightback against Borussia Dortmund in Munich.

Ribery came on after 70 minutes with the Reds trailing and made an immediate impact. Lewandowski equalised within two minutes of Ribery's arrival. Inevitably, it was the Frenchman who won the penalty that was converted by Arjen Robben with five minutes remaining.

There was further good news for Ribery, as he did not have to contend with another moronic pitch invader like in Hamburg in midweek.
