Manuel Neuer and the Top 10 Champions League Saves Ever

Ryan BaileyOct 22, 2014

Manuel Neuer reaffirmed his status as the best goalkeeper in the world on Tuesday evening with another standout Champions League performance.

The Bayern Munich star received particular commendation for an incredible point-blank stop from Roma's Gervinho, which some, including the Metro, are dubbing "The save of the season."

In tribute to Neuer's outstanding effort, here are 10 other incredible Champions League saves.

Gigi Buffon (Juventus) vs. Milan, 2003

1 of 10

The 2003 Champions League Final was an all-Italian affair, with no goals between Juventus and Milan over 120 minutes.

A decisive factor in the Old Lady's clean sheet was goalkeeper Gigi Buffon, who put in a heroic shift between the sticks. Filippo Inzaghi could hardly believe that Buffon managed to keep his header out with an acrobatic save.

David De Gea (Manchester United) vs. Real Madrid, 2013

2 of 10

During Manchester United's Round of 16 visit to the Bernabeu in February 2013, David de Gea kept the Red Devils in the game with a string of brilliant saves.

His unconventional reflex kick save against Fabio Coentrao was particularly special.

Thibaut Courtois (Atletico Madrid) vs. Chelsea, 2014

3 of 10

Thibaut Courtois caused heartache for his parent club Chelsea in last year's competition, when he kept a bullet John Terry header out with a brilliant save in the Blues' semi-final clash with Atletico Madrid.

Jose Mourinho later referred to it as "an impossible save" and it surely contributed to the decision to bring the Belgian back to the Bridge for 2013-14.

Iker Casillas (Real Madrid) vs. Schalke, 2014

4 of 10

Iker Casillas has made many vital saves throughout his lengthy Champions League career and showed why he is still world class in Gelsenkirchen in February 2014.

With Schalke's Julian Draxler firing from point blank range, the Spaniard somehow managed to get his body in the way.

Petr Cech (Chelsea) vs. Barcelona, 2012

5 of 10

Chelsea battled their way to a 1-0 victory over Barcelona in their 2012 semi-final first leg thanks to the repeated heroics of Petr Cech.

The Czech keeper made many great saves, but none better than the one that prevented Carles Puyol from bagging a late equaliser from a Lionel Messi free kick.

Oliver Kahn (Bayern Munich) vs. Valencia, 2001

6 of 10

Bayern Munich clinched their fourth European Cup in 2001 with a huge helping hand from Oliver Kahn in the final against Valencia.

The German shot-stopper had put in a world class performance over 120 minutes, but it was the penalty shootout where he earned his Man of the Match-status.

His saves against Zlatko Zahovic, Amedeo Carboni and Mauricio Pellegrino were, as the commentator kept saying, pretty "Unglaublich!" ("Unbelievable!").

Manuel Neuer (Schalke) vs. Manchester United, 2011

7 of 10

Prior to joining Bayern Munich, Neuer had gained plenty of praise for his efforts guarding the net for Schalke.

One of the sweeper keeper's finest European saves came in his last season in Gelsenkirchen, when he managed to tip a deflected Wayne Rooney long shot away from danger.

Peter Schmeichel (Manchester Utd) vs. Rapid Vienna, 1996

8 of 10

Peter Schmeichel was the last line in a defence that dominated the English game in the 1990s and he put on many valiant displays when Manchester United played in Europe.

Many believe his greatest save of all time occurred in the Red Devils' 1996 trip to Rapid Vienna. Rene Wagner's header looked destined for the back of the net, but somehow the great Dane reached down and tipped it over the bar, in the manner of Gordon Banks against Pele at the 1970 World Cup.

Gregory Coupet (Lyon) vs. Barcelona, 2001

9 of 10

French goalkeeper Gregory Coupet cemented his name in Champions League history during a 2001-02 campaign game with Barcelona.

Shortly after being forced to deal with a poor back pass with an incredible diving header, Coupet pulled off a fantastic reflex save from a Rivaldo header.

Jerzy Dudek (Liverpool) vs. Milan, 2005

10 of 10

Liverpool pulled off one of the most famous comebacks of all time in the 2005 Champions League final, but goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek was certainly an unsung hero.

In the dying minutes of extra time, the Polish shot stopper made an incredible double save against Milan's Andriy Shevchenko, keeping the Reds in the game and leading to his shootout saves against Andrea Pirlo and the Ukrainian striker.

In 2011, the double save was voted top in a UEFA poll of the greatest Champions League moments.
