B/R Experts Predict Top Matches in World Football for Weekend of October 18-20
The European club action resumes this weekend after the international break with some intriguing matches on the horizon.
In the Premier League, Tottenham travel to Manchester City hoping to avoid the six-goal drubbing which befell them at the Etihad Stadium last season.
Manchester United, meanwhile, will be looking to continue their recent renaissance at West Bromwich Albion on Monday.
Turkish giants Galatasaray and Fenerbahce go head-to-head in the Super Lig, while Ajax make the trip to Enschede to face FC Twente.
In Serie A, Rafael Benitez will be the centre of attention when he returns to former club Inter Milan with his current Napoli team.
Our Bleacher Report experts have mulled over the weekend matches and provided their predictions. Do you agree with them?
Manchester City vs. Tottenham Hotspur
1 of 6
Alex Livie: Manchester City 2-0 Tottenham
First goalscorer: Sergio Aguero
City are trailing Chelsea in the title race, but they are much better than the rest and will prove that against Spurs.
Karl Matchett: Manchester City 3-0 Tottenham
First goalscorer: Sergio Aguero
City aren’t at top speed yet, but they are looking good enough to beat sides comfortably if they aren’t completely at the races. That’s Spurs right now: too nice, too neat, nothing like the killers they need to be.
Sam Tighe: Manchester City 2-1 Tottenham
First goalscorer: Jesus Navas
Tottenham are better against the big boys this year, but City are too much for Pochettino's boys.
Will Tidey: Manchester City 2-0 Tottenham
First goalscorer: Sergio Aguero
Two sides in good shape meet at the Etihad, but I can't see Spurs resisting City at home. Aguero to score twice in a 2-0 win.
Michael Cummings: Manchester City 3-1 Tottenham
First goalscorer: Sergio Aguero
City need to keep winning to keep pace with high-flying Chelsea. Spurs likely won't capitulate quite like last season, but it's hard to see past a home win.
Jerrad Peters: Manchester City 4-1 Tottenham
First goalscorer: Sergio Aguero
Matches between these two were one-sided affairs last season—in favour of Manchester City. This one won’t be a 6-0, which was the scoreline in the corresponding fixture in 2013-14, but City should win comfortably.
Alex Dimond: Manchester City 2-0 Tottenham
First goalscorer: Edin Dzeko
Mauricio Pochettino is still forging his side's identity, and Man City have the quality to take advantage of that.
Galatasaray vs. Fenerbahce
2 of 6
Alex Livie: Galatasaray 1-0 Fenerbahce
First goalscorer: Umut Bulut
The huge Istanbul derby is always tough to call, more so with the sides level on points. Gala are unbeaten at home, Fener are yet to win away so that will tip the balance in Gala's favour.
Karl Matchett: Galatasaray 1-1 Fenerbahce
First goalscorer: Wesley Sneijder
Galatasaray need, of course, to not lose this one. Having a new coach inexperienced in the league may go against them, but the crowd and players can ensure they avoid defeat at least.
Sam Tighe: Galatasaray 1-1 Fenerbahce
First goalscorer: Burak Yilmaz
A hotly contested, fearsome match ends in its usual 1-1 draw—much to the disappointment of neutral fans.
Will Tidey: Galatasaray 0-0 Fenerbahce
Very little between these sides, so I'm going for a predictably feisty 0-0 draw, with both reduced to 10 men.
Michael Cummings: Galatasaray 1-1 Fenerbahce
First goalscorer: Burak Yilmaz
These teams have been almost identical this season, both winning three, drawing one and losing one. Both have also scored six goals, with Gala giving up one fewer than Fener's five. Not much to separate them, then, it would seem.
Jerrad Peters: Galatasaray 1-0 Fenerbahce
First goalscorer: Umut Bulut
The home side rarely loses in this derby, and that’s unlikely to change on Saturday. Galatasaray rebounded from their thumping away to Arsenal with a 2-1 victory at Kayseri Erciyesspor.
Alex Dimond: Galatasaray 2-1 Fenerbahce
First goalscorer: Burak Yilmaz
Home advantage could prove the difference for Galatasaray—who will be eager to make another big statement at the start of this title race.
Inter Milan vs. Napoli
3 of 6
Alex Livie: Inter 0-1 Napoli
First goalscorer: Gonzalo Higuain
Napoli have not made the best start to the season, but they have quality in their ranks and will take the points.
Karl Matchett: Inter 1-1 Napoli
First goalscorer: Marek Hamsik
Neither boss or team are in a particularly pleasing position right now, but Inter surely have to raise their game from the past few weeks against a team notably (or supposedly) better than them.
Sam Tighe: Inter 2-2 Napoli
First goalscorer: Mauro Icardi
Napoli are improving but difficult to trust. Inter are just flat-out difficult to trust. Draw.
Will Tidey: Inter 0-1 Napoli
First goalscorer: Jose Callejon
Don't expect many goals in this one, either. Napoli to sneak it, with in-form Callejon grabbing the winner at the San Siro.
Michael Cummings: Inter 1-2 Napoli
First goalscorer: Jose Callejon
Napoli to pour more misery on Inter, who have lost two in a row in the league.
Jerrad Peters: Inter 1-2 Napoli
First goalscorer: Gonzalo Higuain
Call it the "Rafa Benitez Derby." The Napoli manager is a former Inter Milan boss, and on Sunday he’ll be looking to pull one over his former employers. Napoli have an excellent record in this fixture and come into the match unbeaten in four.
Alex Dimond: Inter 1-2 Napoli
First goalscorer: Mauro Icardi
Both sides will believe they have plenty of room for improvement after their start to the season, but Rafa Benitez's current side might have just enough class to get a victory over one of his former ones.
FC Twente vs. Ajax
4 of 6
Alex Livie: FC Twente 1-2 Ajax
First goalscorer: Kolbeinn Sigthorsson
Twente's unbeaten start to the season will come to an end against the Amsterdam outfit.
Karl Matchett: FC Twente 1-1 Ajax
First goalscorer: Luc Castaignos
Twente will see this as an opportunity to prove they can compete in the top two this season and extend their unbeaten start to the Eredivisie—the last team to have that record. A draw away for Ajax will be no bad thing in isolation.
Sam Tighe: FC Twente 1-1 Ajax
First goalscorer: Davy Klaassen
Twente are yet to lose this season and specialise in draws, while Ajax are no longer formidable and capable of slipping up away.
Will Tidey: FC Twente 2-1 Ajax
First goalscorer: Luc Castaignos
Twente are the only unbeaten side in the Eredivisie, which has me going for a home win here.
Michael Cummings: FC Twente 1-1 Ajax
First goalscorer: Lasse Schone
Ajax have recovered since losing back-to-back games in August, but look for Twente's unbeaten run to continue.
Jerrad Peters: FC Twente 0-2 Ajax
First goalscorer: Kolbeinn Sigthorsson
Ajax have dropped just two points from their last five matches against Twente and will be keen to at least keep pace with Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven when they visit Enschede on Sunday.
Alex Dimond: FC Twente 2-2 Ajax
First goalscorer: Davy Klaassen
The champions may feel content with a draw in this one.
West Bromwich Albion vs. Manchester United
5 of 6
Alex Livie: West Brom 1-2 Manchester United
First goalscorer: Robin van Persie
United may be ropey at the back, but they are pretty hot in attack and that will be enough to take the points.
Karl Matchett: West Brom 1-3 Manchester United
First goalscorer: Radamel Falcao
No repeat of last year’s Amalfitano-inspired antics and a routine, straightforward win for United.
Sam Tighe: West Brom 1-2 Manchester United
First goalscorer: Radamel Falcao
It's a litmus test for United away from home and I'm backing them for victory. More Di Maria goodness.
Will Tidey: West Brom 1-3 Manchester United
First goalscorer: Robin van Persie
Manchester United's upward trajectory to continue with a tighter-than-it-looks-on-paper 3-1 win.
Michael Cummings: West Brom 2-3 Manchester United
First goalscorer: Angel Di Maria
Another exciting, if not necessarily clinical, showing from United, who should have enough offensive firepower to see off West Brom.
Jerrad Peters: West Brom 1-3 Manchester United
First goalscorer: Angel Di Maria
Manchester United are finally getting on a bit of a roll but nevertheless it’s difficult to imagine them keeping a clean sheet.
Alex Dimond: West Brom 0-2 Manchester United
First goalscorer: Radamel Falcao
With a bit of extra time to prepare for this game—even if many of his players were away on international duty—Louis van Gaal should come up with a winning formula.
