India vs. West Indies, 2nd ODI: Highlights, Scorecard and Report

Gianni VerschuerenOct 11, 2014

Hosts India (263/7) restored order on Saturday in the second ODI against the visiting West Indies team (215), recording an easy 48-run win to level the series at 1-1.

MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat, but the hosts almost immediately ran into trouble. Shikhar Dhawan contributed just a single run from nine balls before his wicket was taken by Jerome Taylor, his 100th ODI wicket, according to ICC:

India soon settled into a nice rhythm, however, with a steady stream of runs coming through the early and middle overs. The partnership of Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina once again worked their magic, with both scoring 62 runs from 78 and 60 deliveries, respectively.

There was also this odd moment, where Kieron Pollard gifted Dhoni an extra run to keep him off strike:

Dhoni added a quick half-century by scoring 51 from 40 in the latter overs, with most of his damage coming in the final over. The Windies' bowlers did well to limit India after a strong start (163 for 3 at the start of the batting Powerplay), but the chase still looked like a difficult one, with a target of 264.

Taylor finished with three wickets, conceding 54 runs in 10 overs. Spinner Sulieman Benn contributed 10 more innings, surrendering 47 with one wicket.

West Indies got a solid start from Dwayne Smith and Darren Bravo, but following Bravo's dismissal after 26 from 44, the visitors soon fell behind the required run rate. Kieron Pollard added 40 from 50, but India's bowlers did an excellent job of limiting the big hits.

Smith came agonisingly close to a century, with 97 from 97, including 11 fours. Per ICC, it would have been his first in the ODI format:

Amit Mishra completely swung the momentum in favour of the hosts, taking Pollard's wicket and bowling two maidens to Marlon Samuels before coming away with Denesh Ramdin's wicket.

The chase now completely disintegrated, with Ravindra Jadeja taking two wickets in the 43rd over. Peter Miller loves his contributions in the ODI format:

Windies' collapse was all too familiar, going from 170-2 to 201-9. India's bowlers were free to aggressively go after wickets and West Indies simply had no answer, eventually going 215 all out.

Mohammed Shami took the final wicket, one of four in 9.3 overs, surrendering 36. Buvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Mishra and Jadeja all feasted on Windies' struggling batsmen, levelling the series in dominant fashion.

Bravo told ESPN Cricinfo he thought his team had it won at one point:

"

Thought at one point we had it in the bag. Give credit to India. Jaddu. Mahi and the boys put pressure on us. Very small ground, we batted well upfront. Losing wickets at crucial times, lost our way in the middle. Definitely have to work on that. At CSK he (Dhoni) says he always hit my slower balls out of the ground. So I am still waiting.

"

The third ODI will take place on Tuesday in Visakhapatnam, as the hosts will attempt to assert their dominance over the Windies, who looked far more like the eighth-ranked ODI nation today than they did on Wednesday.
