What Would Jason Do?: NBA Commish
Part One of Five
If I were David Stern.
I am not the biggest basketball fan admittedly, so, an explanation. I decided to begin this series with my weakest point of knowledge.
So, here goes.
If I were the Commissioner of the NBA, the number one priority would be placing teams where they could make money. Struggling teams in financial areas like Indianapolis and Sacramento would be candidates for change, as well as teams in markets that currently were making money, whose relocation would spur financial change in other areas.
I'll cut to the chase—Las Vegas.
It's an area that has been begging for a professional franchise for years.
It's an area that is very gambling centric, yes, but what would change really? I guess the gambling would be legal.
And third—it is one of the most struggling economies in our country.
I remember after Katrina, hearing about the Saints ownership considering relocation, only to find that when they returned to the Super Dome, a community had rallied behind this young team.
Allow a team in LV—now that's NBA Cares.
Imagine what would happen if the Clippers had a new fan base, a new support group in Las Vegas.
Imagine if the Nets had the same in Baltimore.
These are moves short of 200 miles that would expand fan bases, and make all the difference in the world.
Imagine if the entire NY area contended for Knicks tickets.
Imagine if the entire LA area contended for Lakers tickets.
All the while expanding fan bases throughout the Southwest and the Northeast.
All the while quietly suggesting to fans of teams throughout the midwest that their teams may no longer be their teams without more support.
In closing, I guess I'd allow a relocation to Las Vegas, and shall we say, "let the chips fall where they may."
