The Perfect Fantasy Team

Jason FliederJul 22, 2009

Alright, so here goes, first a bit of history.

As far as fantasy football goes, my record currently stands at 11 of 16.

But, I'm not talking about wins, I'm talking about championships.  So maybe I'm tootin' my own horn a bit, but before you accuse me, I am 15 of 16 for winning seasons.

What I propose here is that you simply listen to what i have to say, and accept that it can be done (I've done it already this season... twice)—and I guarantee that you will, at minimum, make a championship run.  In the following, I will state my pick, as well as why they'll be there, and why you should take said player.  For arguments sake, we'll say you have somewhere between the third and eighth pick.

*Disclaimer*

-This team is based on pre-set ESPN scoring.  That means 1QB, 2RB, 1RB/WR, 2WR, 1TE, 1D/ST and 1K.

First round:  Drew Brees

I feel (and I don't think that I'm alone) that there is way too much emphasis on taking a running back first overall.  Unless you can get All Day, or the Burner, this is, without a doubt, your safest bet.  I personally guarantee at least 4500 yrds and 35 TDs—or about 280 pts. Also known as about 10 pts. more than ESPN currently has Adrian Peterson projected at.

So there you go, you're already ahead of the first pick.

Second Round: Clinton Portis

Yeah, I know, you're gonna say that he's averaging an ADP (average draft position) of 20th overall, so why take him 13th-18th overall, but this is a pick worth making, and I'll tell you why.

A—this is a guy that knows what it means to carry his team.  He's been doing it for eight years now.

B—Their QB's name is Jason Campbell.

C—The way the redskins have revamped their defense, I foresee a lot more chain moving with the lead.

Third round: Anquan Boldin

It's following the same principal as a receiver I'll, name later, but frankly, when you watch Larry Fitzgerald catch a pass over two defenders, you're missing this wide open playmaker on the other side of the field.  The man had almost 1100 yrds with 11 TDs, while missing four games.

Fourth round: TJ Houshmanzadeh

Honestly, It amazes me that he is going as late as he is.  He WILL eclipse the 1000 yard mark.  After all, he had 904 yards receiving from a backup.

Fifth Round: Derrick Ward

Remember Michael Turner?  He came nowhere near 1000 yards in San Diego.  Then he came to the ATL and became the number two running back in Fantasy Football.

Sixth Round: Lee Evans

Yup, T.O. is a Buffalo Bill.  As a number two receiver, mark my words.  Talented young QB + Established comfort with receiver - Double teams (which fantasy owners can thank T.O. for) = possibly the number one receiver in Fantasy Football.

Seventh Round: Donny Avery

Ummn, who else'll Bulger throw to?

Eighth round: Devin Hester

Yup, this is a risk pick, either Hester'll learn how to use his speed to gain separation, and he'll be a 1000 yard receiver, or he won't and he'll be a 600 yard receiver.  Either way, with Cutler under center, in the eighth round this is a steal.

Ninth Round: Julius Jones

Barring injury, he'll be a 1000 yard rusher. Why? Because with TJ Duckett and Justin Forsett behind him, he has to be.

Tenth Round: John Carlson

MARK MY WORDS—this young man will be a top three TE at the end of this year.  If not, at worst, the point difference last year between him and the number one TE was less than 30 points. (or<2pts a game.)

You may Notice that most teams are at least almost full at this point,  if you're worried that the point difference between the number one kickers/Defenses and the K/D you can pickup in the last two rounds will cost you games, you've already lost.

Eleventh Round: Brett Farve/Travaris Jackson, Sage Rosenfels

Make no mistake—you took Drew Brees, and he'll be your starter for all but one game—week 5—when the Vikings play the Rams.  Take this QB, and dump him for the hottest player before week six.

12th: Jeremy Maclin

Low Floor: Yes, High Ceiling: Yes

13th:  Nate Burleson

Few WRs in the league have an easier schedule versus their position.

14th: Josh Brown, K

One of the most accurate kickers in the league.  Indoors.

15th: Dustin Keller

Once again, John Carlson is your starter, but in seattle's bye week (week 7), the jets play the Raiders.

16th: SEA D/ST

With Aaron Curry, the return of Ken Lucas, and younger DTs, this may be the best Defense this year.

*note* watch Patrick Kerney's health through camp.
