Liverpool Transfer News: Marco Reus, Victor Valdes Bids Urged by Jamie Carragher
Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher has revealed he would love to see the Reds sign Borussia Dortmund's Marco Reus, while also suggesting Brendan Rodgers should bring in Victor Valdes to compete with goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.
Carragher responded honestly to questions from his followers on Twitter. It's clear the Sky Sports pundit believes there is major room to improve the Anfield squad, despite Rodgers' plethora of summer signings. Reus should be the main target, as noted in Carragher's responses:

Earlier in the month, Liverpool owner John W. Henry sparked rumours the Fenway Sports Group would facilitate a move for Reus with his mysterious tweet:
It is suggested Henry's message was a jovial jab at those who continue to request Reus' signing, per Sam Long of Squawka. This is a likely explanation, but the businessman must have known what impact this tweet would have on many supporters.
At least Reus appears in consideration at a time where he is rumoured to have outlined his desire to move away from the Westfalenstadion, as reported by Marca and via Ed Malyon of the Mirror. Although Real Madrid are said to be favourites, as noted in the aforementioned report, a potential move to Liverpool continues to be speculated.
One player who appears destined to stand in front of the Kop is Victor Valdes. The former Barcelona goalkeeper needs to prove his fitness before Brendan Rodgers will offer him a contract, according to Chris McKenna of the Daily Star. Carragher believes he would be a smart acquisition:
Mignolet is currently under fire after a run of disappointing performances. Gary Neville, Carragher's colleague at Sky Sports, recently suggested the Belgian's positioning is too low when trying to save shots from long range. Phil Jagielka slammed home a late equaliser during Saturday's Merseyside derby, a shot Neville believes Mignolet could have grabbed if his starting position had been higher.
"I'd seen it last season and didn't mention it then and then I saw it on Saturday and thought that it's a pattern" said Neville, per Sky Sports. "It’s a technical error for me, the way in which he is crouched down, and that’s the reason I mention it."
Football writer Kristof Terreur highlighted Mignolet's crouch:
"This was the detail. Well noticed, I must admit. Gary Neville comparing Mignolet's low starting position to Neuer's. pic.twitter.com/pwQHmUg5IK

Rodgers recently told the current No. 1 to be more "aggressive" when coming off his line, per McKenna. Mignolet lacks assertiveness when sprinting from his goalmouth and is often seen flying hopelessly with one arm in the air. His shortcomings are easily overcome with hard work, but Valdes' potential appearance could see time run out.

"Up until now in his Liverpool career he hasn’t made those big saves," Carragher told Sky Sports. "If it continues I can see Liverpool looking for another goalkeeper."
Valdes would be a smart signing for Liverpool if he proves fit, but nothing could prepare the Anfield crowd for the arrival of Reus. He is a proven world-class entity and naturally exerts the cut-and-thrust game Rodgers loves his team to play. Versatility would also ensure Reus' importance, as like Raheem Sterling, he can lead attacks from anywhere across the front line.
The pair linking up remains something of a dream for Liverpool supporters right now. Rodgers is an ambitious manager who has the full backing of the board, but Reus' arrival would rank among his biggest career achievements to date. Other European clubs will surely have a say, but like Carragher, many fans would undoubtedly get behind the board's potential decision to offer a huge sum for the German star.
