UK Back Pages: Papers Savage Wayne Rooney After Manchester United Red Card

Mark PattersonSep 27, 2014

Wayne Rooney is the unsurprising figure dominating the back pages after the Manchester United captain was sent off for a reckless challenge during their Premier League clash with West Ham United on Saturday.

The Ryder Cup also figures strongly, with Europe poised to retain the trophy at Gleneagles on Sunday, having amassed a 10-6 lead.

In The Independent, the two combine for a hero (Justin Rose) and villain (Rooney) spread:

The Mail on Sunday headlines its piece simply with "Wild Rooney."

The Daily Star Sunday, meanwhile, which dubs it a "mad tackle," goes with "Wayne Crazy" as its headline.

In many ways, Rooney can count himself lucky that golf is on, as it means the spotlight has been shared—and in some cases, his misdemeanour is overlooked almost entirely. The Sunday Express relegates Rooney to the right-hand rail:

The Sunday Telegraph actually focuses on manager Louis Van Gaal's defence of the striker rather than Rooney's foul:
