La Liga Table 2014: Updated Standings Following Matchday 6 Results

Steven CookSep 26, 2014

The 2014-15 La Liga season enters Matchday 6 with a jumbled crop of contenders topping the table, leaving a handful of clubs with the opportunity to take the outright lead.

Barcelona's perfect start to the league slate was stymied on Wednesday with a scoreless draw against Malaga, and that allowed for Valencia and Sevilla to tie up the top of the table with 13 points. Since drawing against each other to open the season, both Valencia and Sevilla have been perfect in league play.

Throw in surprise clubs like Celta Vigo, along with traditional powers Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, and you have a league table that is bound to get even more interesting as the season wears along.

Friday

MADRID, SPAIN - SEPTEMBER 20: Fabian Orellano (L) of Real Club Celta de Vigo celebrates with teammate Manuel Agudo Nolito during the La Liga match between Club Atletico de Madrid and Real Club Celta de Vigo at the Vicente Calderon stadium on September

Nobody around La Liga is going to be sleeping on Celta Vigo anymore—not after their 1-0 road win over Elche kept them unbeaten through six games and propelled them to join elite company near the top of the table.

Led by a stoppage-time winner from Nolito, Celta Vigo stood tall past a furious surge from the home side and netted the late goal when it counted to take the full three points.

It's been a magnificent start to the season not just for Celta Vigo, but for the goalscorer. Nolito's winner marked his fourth goal of this young season, as he's making an early case to threaten the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as La Liga's top scorer—don't you laugh, let the man dream.

Celta Vigo were much more competent last year with a ninth-place league finish, as opposed to Elche—which finished one point clear of relegation. But the victors on Friday were able to make up for a poor 2013-14 record against the opponent, per OptaJose:

The victory makes it three wins and three draws to start the season, which keeps them one point shy of the three-way tie between Barcelona, Valencia and Sevilla. With matches against Villarreal, Athletic Bilbao and Levante in October, they could very well keep pace for the immediate future.

As for Elche, well, this season is starting to shape up just like last year's—and that's far from a good sign. With just four points through six games, they're sniffing the relegation zone yet again and will need a win soon to pick themselves back up.

Saturday

Six matchdays into the campaign and Barcelona have yet to give up a goal. They reclaimed their place atop the league standings with a resounding 6-0 victory over Grenada. Neymar continued his inspiring play after returning from his devastating injury at the 2014 World Cup, notching a hat-trick in the contest. Lionel Messi chipped in with a goal of his own.

Atletico Madrid handily defeated Sevilla 4-0 to keep pace with the Catalan club. They sit comfortably in second place and will look to prove that last season's successes weren't solely a result of the goal-scoring exploits of Diego Costa, who is now with Chelsea.

Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo proved their worth in Real Madrid's match against Villarreal, scoring a goal each en route to a stifling 2-0 victory. The win moved them up to fifth place in the table, a lowly ranking for this world-renowned club. However, the convincing win sets them up to continue rising through the ranks and challenge Atletico and Barcelona this season.

In the mid-to-lower table clashes, Athletic Bilbao tied Eibar in a drab 0-0 draw that featured just three total shots on goal, per ESPN.com. Rayo Vallecano scored a vital 2-0 shutout win over Levante to move into the top half of the table.

Sunday

Edgar's stoppage-time goal propelled Almeria to a vital 1-0 victory over Deportivo La Coruna, bumping them into the top half of the table while the losing side inches closer to the relegation zone in the season's early goings.

Valencia are now second in the table after their 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad on Sunday. A win would have brought them level with Barcelona atop the standings, but Sergio Madrazo's 36th-minute strike evened the score after Carles Vicent put the home side ahead with a fine goal of his own in the 15th minute.

Indeed, the lofty position at the peak of the table belied Valencia's performance, as Real Sociedad outshot them 18-7 in the contest, per ESPN.com.

Getafe moved out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 victory over Malaga. It's an important win but may only be a temporary fix, as just three points separate last-place Cordoba from Getafe's perch in 14th. Michel scored the difference-maker in the 25th minute of play, and Malaga never proved to be much of a threat, failing to get a single shot on target and racking up 16 fouls in the contest.

They will also be disappointed in defender Weligton's red card that came at the death, which will keep him out for the next contest.

Cordoba failed to escape the cellar of the league with their 0-0 draw against Espanyol. They played well, garnering 61 percent of possession, but the lack of offensive cohesion will hurt them going forward, and goals may be tough to come by this season.
