Gilas Pilipinas vs. Kazakhstan: TV Info, Stream, Preview for 2014 Asian Games

James DudkoSep 27, 2014

Gilas Pilipinas will still be hurting from their five-point loss to perennial nemesis Iran, as well as two sobering defeats to Qatar and South Korea. That makes this Group H quarter-final match of the 2014 Asian Games against Kazakhstan a must-win for the Philippines.

That will require a rebound in form for several Gilas players, especially center Marcus Douthit. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan has made a commendable overall impact at the games in Incheon, already picking up more than a handful of golds.

However, basketball is not traditionally an event the Central Asian nation usually thrives in. That, along with the attacking brand of ball played by Gilas, should make the Philippines a clear favourite.

Most of the pre-match focus will remain on Douthit. He was sat down for the game against South Korea. The decision was made after coach Chot Reyes was left far from impressed with the center's attitude during the 77-68 loss to Qatar.

The coach was not shy about making his feelings known:

However, after watching his team surrender a third-quarter lead to South Korea, Reyes is ready to bring Douthit back. He confirmed the center's absence won't stretch to two games, per Basketball in Asia blogger Nick Bedard:

It's no wonder Gilas are keen to welcome Douthit back after the squad's recent failings. He can keep things strong in the middle.

That should provide a platform for guards LA Tenorio and Paul Lee to thrive. Lee and Tenorio should be too much for Kazakhstan.

The squad appeared jaded during a recent defeat to China:

That's hardly the best preparation for facing Gilas. However, it's probably wise to expect some early nerves from Pilipinas after three defeats in a row.

That certainly isn't the best preparation for a decisive quarter-final match. If Douthit and his teammates lack an early rapport, Kazakhstan will have the chance to spring a real shock.
