Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho is a major doubt to feature in the Reds' Capital One Cup fixture against Middlesbrough, as Brendan Rodgers confirmed the Brazilian picked up a groin injury that also kept him out of the squad against West Ham United.
The Reds' boss confirmed the news via the club's official website on Monday, saying: "We just need to assess one or two. Jordan Henderson picked up a knock so we need to assess where he's at. And Philippe Coutinho is highly unlikely for tomorrow as well."
The BBC's Ben Smith added Rickie Lambert will make his first start for Liverpool:
Fans and pundits questioned Rodgers' decision not to feature Coutinho in the 3-1 loss against West Ham, but the news the player carried an injury puts that decision in a whole new light.
