FIFA 15: Early Expert Reviews of Newest Modes Ahead of Game Release

R. Cory SmithSep 22, 2014

On the eve of the FIFA 15 release, fans are clamoring to play the full version of the latest game. As more features slowly begin to leak out, gamers are already preparing for months of playing for online bragging rights.

The EA Sports franchise remains one of the best sports games in the world but has a lot to live up to after last year's release. Heading into the second year of the next-generation consoles, FIFA has pulled out all the stops to move the game forward.

Unlike other sports games, this year's version offers a completely different version to its predecessors. Prior to the release on Tuesday in North America, here's a look at the latest reviews of the new modes.

Early Reviews

Gamers prepping for binge playing the latest version of FIFA need to know exactly what they're in for. Thanks to reviews and a demo version of the game, fans have a good idea of what to expect ahead of the release.

One of the most talked-about components of FIFA 15 is the updated goalkeeper play. Something that has been a tremendous shortcoming over the years for the franchise now has new AI and looks promising.

But even with the updated 'keepers, the offensive game play is still tremendous on the updated version. Jake O'Donnell of SportsGrid notes that the game still remains true to its roots despite the changes:

"

Without turning FIFA 15 into a cartoon of what soccer should look like, EA has successfully increased the “fun” qualities of the sport without devaluing the more cerebral strategic component. ... Defenders are less likely to stop through passes just because they’re standing near them, shots sneak underneath goalkeepers, and deflection goals actually happen.

"

Needless to say, it's not just the 'keepers that earned an upgrade but also the defense overall.

Along with the fact that the defense is more fluid, the newest game also offers more difficulty on that side of the ball. Previous versions of the game made it easy to change possession, but those methods simply won't be effective in this year's release.

Tackling will be a near necessity for gamers this time around, as Simon Rice of The Independent points out:

"

The latest instalment has seen a revamp of the tackling system with the size and strength of the players contesting the ball playing a major part. Having the likes of Yaya Toure in your team will pay dividends on this front. Whilst in previous incarnations it was possible to get close to players and automatically nick the ball off them, a deliberate, well-timed tackle is now needed. It makes the art of defending more challenging and hands the initiative to the attacking side - but that's a good thing.

"

Defending is going to take some work but should end up being much better this time around.

While no reviews for updated modes such as Ultimate Team are out just yet, there are several new features. Features such as concept squads and friendly seasons will make the mode even better, along with giving FIFA faithful more to love about the game.

EA Sports provided some notes on the new upgrades, but gamers will have to wait to find out more when they start playing. It will take time to get used to the updated game, but fans will come to love the new features.

Consistently playing the game will bring a lot to light, including which teams are the most competitive in the new FIFA. With new features such as updated goalies and increased speed, expect some hiccups in the next-generation game.

Over time, FIFA 15 will prove to be yet another stalwart for gamers much like previous versions.
