Why Pedro Is Under the Most Pressure for Barcelona Following Win Against Levante

Tre' AtkinsonSep 22, 2014

Barcelona convincingly won their fourth straight La Liga match to start the season when they trumped Levante 5-0 on Sunday. The three points took the Catalans to sole possession of the top of the table, and fans have much to be excited about.

Neymar continued his fine form and link-up play with Lionel Messi, while the likes of Ivan Rakitic and Jeremy Mathieu once again showed that they fit the club well. But not everyone is enjoying Barcelona’s winning streak.

Despite the massive victory in Valencia, one player in particular has come under the microscope for Luis Enrique’s side.

Pedro started his third league game of the season but was yet again the most disappointing spot of the Barcelona lineup.

The 27-year-old struggled to get involved with the attack and often looked a bit lost in transition. He was willing to track back, as is always the case with Pedro, but he never seemed able to really create danger.

Luckily, the winger was able to pop up in the right place to score the club’s fourth goal of the night into an empty net. But despite the goal, it was just another bad night for Pedro.

With every passing match, Pedro looks to be the weak link in the Blaugrana chain. He has yet to make his presence felt in a match, and that could be part of the reason why young forwards have been handed chances this early in the season.

Of course, it is quite difficult to pinpoint what is going on with Pedro. The winger knows the system and is used to playing alongside Messi and others, but he just hasn’t been able to put it together.

Perhaps it is simply a dip in form that has seen Pedro struggle to be at his best, or he may not be at the level he was a few years ago. Regardless of what the reason is, the 27-year-old has not been nearly as productive for the Blaugrana as the club would hope for.

After the big win against Levante, the pressure will mount even more on Pedro’s shoulders. It is clear with every passing game that his place in the squad is up for grabs, and the likes of Munir El Haddadi and others are ready to pounce.

Additionally, it is only a matter of time before Luis Suarez is cleared to play, which will only make Pedro’s chances even more limited.

As of now, the test has officially begun for Pedro. The winger must prove that he still has a place in the Barcelona squad and that he is capable of producing at the highest level for a team that is challenging for trophies.

Wins and goals aside, Pedro is far from the same player fans enjoyed watching a few years ago. His place in the team is questionable at best, and the winger must now seize his spot or watch as someone else earns it.

Is Pedro in danger of losing his place in the squad? What must the winger do to return to his best form? Leave your thoughts and comments below!
