What Is The Spread Offense (Spread Option)?
The Spread Offense, compared to other offenses is basically brand new, many teams run a spread offense, different types though.
For instance Texas Tech ran Air Raid (a pass oriented version). Remember all the yards Graham Harrell had last year, with Michael Crabtree. Missouri also runs this. The Spread Option(run) more popular, ran by West Virginia, Purdue, Michigan, and Florida to name a few.
Okay let's go over the basics:
- More Shotgun sets.
- The point is to spread the defense out and run.
- Need a mobile Quarterback.
- Need for speed, and hurry-up offense.
In the Spread Option the QB has to decide whether to keep the ball, throw the ball, or hand it off to the running back. This is called Read Option. This is only a branch of a part of the spread option, The Double Option.
The Double Option just means you have two potential, ball carriers. the QB has two RBs next to him, that way you can effectively us the misdirection, since you don't have a blocker.
The QB has to really read the defense, espescially the Defensive End. The quarterback will hand it off to the back if the Defensive End is playing outside, if not the QB keeps it.
There's also The Triple Option, which means you have three possible ball carriers. This is the rarest type of the Spread Option.
We don't know the future of the Spread Offense, will more teams you use it, and will it still be effective? Will this go into the NFL? I think so, I think that more teams will you use the Spread Offense in college, which will cause the NFL teams to draft and sign those players. Eventually.
