7 Most Important College Football Recruiting Visits of Week 4

Tyler DonohueSep 18, 2014

The fourth weekend of 2014 college football action is nearly upon us. As usual, programs are set to welcome coveted prospects to campus for game-day festivities with an opportunity to take strides toward crucial commitments.

The recruiting trail that leads these athletes to national signing day is long and winding, featuring stops at various universities along the way. Several talented prospects will make another step in the process before Sunday by spending personal time with collegiate coaches, players and, of course, frenzied fanbases.

Here's a look at key campus visits to keep an eye on this weekend and how they could impact various recruiting classes.

Arkansas: 4-Star OL Jalin Barnett (Lawton, Oklahoma)

1 of 7

247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 60 nationally, No. 4 among offensive guards

High School Success

Jalin Barnett bulldozes his way through defensive fronts, paving the way for a prolific rushing attack at Lawton High School. The 6'4", 315-pound prospect punishes opponents with tremendous hand placement and finishing technique.

He spearheaded a ground game that produced 313 rushing yards per contest during an 11-1 campaign last fall, per MaxPreps. Barnett has excelled in elite camp settings, handling some of the country's top defensive linemen with consistency.

Recruitment Status

This is a pivotal campus trip for both Barnett and the Razorbacks. Arkansas is battling with Oklahoma for his commitment and must convince him to move beyond state borders in order to compete in Fayetteville.

The Razorbacks have been able to blow opponents off the football in power-running situations, and another dominant effort in the trenches could convince Barnett he fits in perfectly as a road grader. The Sooners hope his time in SEC territory is simply a brief visit before staying on home turf at the next level.

Virginia Tech: 5-Star DB Kevin Toliver (Jacksonville, Florida)

2 of 7

247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 7 nationally, No. 2 among cornerbacks

High School Success

Kevin Toliver is a star among stars on a talent-laden Trinity Christian Academy squad that captured the state title last season. He effectively shut down his side of the field last season and continues to progress as an open-field tackler.

The 6'2", 185-pound cornerback uses elite length and instincts to close off passing lanes and creates serious doubt in quarterbacks' minds when they survey the progression of downfield routes. Toliver fits the mold of larger defensive backs who have become prevalent in top NFL and collegiate secondaries.

"I'm definitely a physical cornerback. That's how I like to play," he said this summer.

Recruitment Status

Toliver, who committed to LSU in his sophomore season, continues to survey his options. He's one of several headliners who are expected in attendance at Virginia Tech this weekend.

It's the second time he's seen the Hokies in action. Toliver watched the team pull off an upset victory at Ohio State.

LSU seems to still be in solid control here, but Toliver is clearly leaving the door open for other possibilities. He also plans to use official visits at Auburn and UCLA, per Barton Simmons of 247Sports.

West Virginia: 4-star DB Jordan Whitehead (Monaca, Pennsylvania)

3 of 7

247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 159 nationally, No. 20 among cornerbacks

High School Success

Central Valley High School standout Jordan Whitehead ranks among America's most impressive defensive recruits in the Northeast. The 6'0", 180-pound prospect has the range to line up anywhere in the defensive backfield but projects ideally at cornerback.

The four-year starter made a strong statement in 2011, when he recorded 83 tackles as a freshman. He has continued to progress in pass coverage throughout his career and posted impressive numbers last fall, racking up four interceptions to go with 14 pass breakups.

Recruitment Status

Whitehead is completing the final stretch of a whirlwind recruitment and plans to announce a commitment Oct. 3. He's journeyed to Ohio State and Pitt in the past for official visits and now gets an up-close look at West Virginia.

The Mountaineers are attempting to solidify a defensive backfield that has been abused at times since a move into the Big 12. West Virginia, which hosted Whitehead this summer for a camp, is a strong contender in this recruitment, but Penn State appears to be the team to beat.

He is slated to spend his final official visit in Happy Valley next week before revealing a decision.

LSU: 4-Star 2016 RB Tre Turner (New Orleans, Louisiana)

4 of 7

247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 154 nationally in 2016 class, No. 13 among running backs

High School Success

Tre Turner is a two-sport star who could also have a bright future in baseball. His 40-yard dash is timed at sub-4.4 seconds and creates matchup nightmares for opposing defenses.

The 5'10", 193-pound playmaker has come out of the gates sprinting this season, making the most of 46 carries through two contests. He has gained 323 yards and scored four touchdowns as a junior, per Sonny Shipp of 247Sports, exhibiting both big-play skills and durability.

Recruitment Status

Turner is a coveted prospect in SEC country, though options have opened across the country. LSU has yet to extend an offer, but that could change as soon as this weekend.

Arizona State and Mississippi State are among the top contenders, while Missouri, Arkansas and Ole Miss have also presented scholarship offers. He is expected to visit Florida State in October, per 247Sports.

Arizona State: 4-Star ATH Jaason Lewis (Virginia Beach, Virginia)

5 of 7

247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 205 nationally, No. 17 among athletes

High School Success

The latest explosive athlete to emerge at Ocean Lake High School provides highlights on both sides of the ball. He played a pivotal role at receiver and defensive back during the team's 12-1 run last season.

Jaason Lewis intercepted four passes, piled up more than 1,000 offensive yards (515 rushing) and scored 14 touchdowns as a junior. He opened his senior campaign with a four-touchdown performance, per Rod Johnson of Rivals.com.

Recruitment Status

Lewis, a versatile 6'3", 233-pound talent, could end up at various positions in college. Given his size and physical frame, a career at outside linebacker may be in the cards.

However, most teams view him as a game-changing receiver with enough size to potentially bulk up into a tight end. He previously committed to UCLA but backed off that pledge this spring.

Lewis visited Nebraska earlier this month and is also considering offers from Oregon, Ole Miss, Miami and LSU.

Florida State: 4-Star OL Matthew Burrell (Woodbridge, Virginia)

6 of 7

247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 94 nationally, No. 5 among offensive guards

High School Success

C.D. Hylton High School lineman Matthew Burrell bullies defensive linemen on the field but is among the most likable guys off it. He displayed plenty of natural power and a relentless drive during his junior season and legitimized those traits this summer at The Opening, an invite-only football showcase held at Nike's world headquarters in Oregon.

"I came out here to show what I can do," Burrell said in between drills at the event.

He did just that, getting the better of top-tier opponents time and time again. Burrell shows the abilities to line up at offensive tackle or slide inside to the guard position.

Recruitment Status

Burrell visited Ohio State earlier this month and recently named the Buckeyes as his team to beat. Florida State hosted him this summer and gets a second chance to impress the 6'5", 302-pound prospect this weekend.

He will continue his official visit tour throughout the season. Upcoming trips to Penn State and Florida remain on the agenda.

5-Star DE Josh Sweat (Chesapeake, Virginia)

7 of 7

247Sports' Composite Ranking: No. 1 overall, No. 1 among weak-side defensive ends

High School Success

Josh Sweat is considered one of the most explosive defensive linemen we've seen this decade. The athletically gifted prospect is powerful and scary quick for his 6'5", 240-pound frame, running the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds this summer.

He compiled 22 sacks and 94 tackles in 2013, drawing respect from fellow top-tier prospects.

"You have to be perfect against Sweat," 5-star Clemson offensive tackle commit Mitch Hyatt said after facing him this summer. "Otherwise, you're done."

He opened the 2014 season with two sacks, three tackles for loss and a rushing touchdown, per Craig Haubert of ESPN.

Recruitment Status

If there's a favorite in the mix here, Sweat has managed to keep that information close to his vest. He visited Ohio State two weeks ago and watched the Hokies pull off a surprising road victory.

Sweat is squarely in Virginia Tech's cross-hairs and represents a golden opportunity for the program to prove it can still keep top talent at home. This weekend is the latest chance for Frank Beamer and company to drive home that point, but future official visits to Florida State, Georgia and Oregon also loom large.
