China to Dominate, but Hosts Should Thrive

At the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China took home a record 199 golds and 416 medals overall, per AFP via Interaksyon.com.
The next closest nation in the medal tables was this year's hosts, South Korea, who won 76 golds and 232 medals overall, while Japan came third.
A similar result should be expected in 2014, although the home advantage should give the hosts something of a boost as is often the case.
There is no beating the Chinese, though, who will have some of their stars on show with the likes of double Olympic gold medallist Sun Yang turning out in the pool.
Sun seems supremely confident of beating his Korean rival Park Tae-hwan, per AFP, but it is likely to be a close-run thing when the two freestylers face off:
In the football tournament—which is already under way—men's favourites and defending champions Japan have already been given a reality check after they were beaten 3-1 by Iraq on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, in the women's tournament, South Korea inflicted a crushing 10-0 defeat on India on Wednesday, the hosts setting down a real marker to improve on their bronze-medal finish from four years ago.
Friday sees the official start of the Games, with the opening ceremony taking place at the main stadium in Incheon.
However, there has been a worrying lack of ticket sales ahead of the start of the Games, with only 18 percent of the total available reportedly being snapped up, per Reuters' Patrick Johnston:
Empty venues may sadly be a common sight at the 2014 Asian Games, as the Korean public have failed to truly be inspired by the majority of events.
With such enormous talent on show, there is set to be a huge amount of fierce competition across the 15 days of events.
There will no doubt be significant upsets as well as great triumphs, but organisers will desperately be hoping for a surge in on-the-day ticket sales to create the appropriate atmosphere for what should be a fine spectacle across the board.
Predictions
Medal Table Top Three: 1. China 2. South Korea 3. Japan
Star of the Games: Park Tae-hwan
Men's football gold medallists: UAE
