Atletico Madrid vs. Celta Vigo: Winners and Losers from La Liga Game

Tim CollinsSep 20, 2014

Atletico Madrid were forced to accept a 2-2 draw at the Vicente Calderon on Saturday, as Celta Vigo took it to the defending Spanish champions in an enthralling encounter.

After a tight opening to the game, Pablo Hernandez opened the scoring for the visitors with a stunning back-heeled goal from Carles Planas' long diagonal ball.

But Diego Simeone's side quickly responded, grabbing an equaliser through Miranda in the 31st minute before Diego Godin put the hosts ahead just before half-time.

In trademark fashion, both Atleti goals were the result of set pieces.

At that point, Los Colchoneros looked poised to record their third La Liga victory of the season, but Celta Vigo began the second half brightly and levelled proceedings with Nolito's penalty after Planas was taken down inside the box by Miranda.

Thereafter, the home side dominated the game, but couldn't find the decisive goal as Eduardo Berizzo's men secured a valuable point in the Spanish capital.

Across the following slides, we examine the winners and losers from Saturday's clash.

Winner: Antoine Griezmann

1 of 5

After a subdued opening to his Atletico Madrid career, Antoine Griezmann sparkled in front of his new home crowd at the Vicente Calderon on Saturday.

Paired up front alongside Raul Jimenez, the Frenchman was his team's brightest performer in attack, running at Celta Vigo's back four with characteristic aggression.

In the first half, it took a superb stop from Sergio Alvarez to deny Griezmann of Atleti's opener, while his interplay with Koke and Arda Turan going forward was extremely eye-catching.

Loser: Miranda

2 of 5

Despite scoring the first-half equaliser, Miranda was far from the commanding defensive presence he typically is against Celta Vigo on Saturday.

On a number of occasions, the Brazilian gifted the visitors the ball with wildly inaccurate passes from inside his own half and was also guilty of becoming regularly detached from the other members of Atletico Madrid's back four.

Capping off an uncharacteristic performance was his clumsy challenge on Carles Planas not long after half-time that resulted in Nolito's successful penalty kick.

Winner: Pablo Hernandez

3 of 5

There will be few finer goals in La Liga this season than Pablo Hernandez's opener against Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

Isolated in the penalty area against the supreme Diego Godin, the Chilean allowed Carles Planas' long diagonal ball to pass over his head, before back-heeling a spectacular volley past Miguel Angel Moya to open the scoring for the visitors.

Against the run of play, the goal was a major blow for Diego Simeone's side, and had it been scored by Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, many social media platforms would have likely suffered a meltdown.

Loser: Raul Jimenez

4 of 5

Raul Jimenez was deployed as Atletico Madrid's primary target in attack against Celta Vigo on Saturday, covering for the injured Mario Mandzukic.

Still very raw and lacking the physique to battle with opposing defenders, the Mexican struggled to make any sort of impression at the Vicente Calderon, out-muscled on several occasions and failing to fluidly join the home side's attacking forays as they searched for a late winner.

At just 23, the talented forward will need time to adjust to the demands of Spanish football, but a price tag reading €10 million from this summer's transfer window means he needs to make an impact.

Winner: Koke

5 of 5

While he's still typically deployed on the flanks, it seems inevitable that Koke will become Atletico Madrid's dominant figure in midfield by season's end.

On Saturday, the 22-year-old was central to everything the home side did in attack, linking up beautifully with Antoine Griezmann and Arda Turan, while also delivering a number of incisive balls from set-piece situations.

Of course, his sublime free-kick that set up Miranda's goal will be the source of attention for the young Spaniard, but the way he orchestrated his team's attacking moves suggests Koke isn't far from becoming the most influential component of Diego Simeone's side.
