Liverpool Transfer News: Reds' New Signings Will Need Time, Patience
Liverpool's hot start to the 2014-15 Premier League season came to a sudden halt on Saturday, losing 1-0 against Aston Villa, and the defeat shows this young Reds team will need time to achieve its full potential.
Brendan Rodgers discussed his players in his post-match presser, and as reported by Goal, he made it very clear he has full confidence in every member of his squad:
"At the beginning of the season, I've said I've got to trust all the players that I have.
We've got a big couple of months, a really exciting couple of months coming up. Looking at it, this [Aston Villa] was a game where I felt we could do that.
[...]We've built a squad here so that I trust all the players. As a team and a squad we just didn't deliver. [Sterling] will certainly play on Tuesday night.
[...]The players that we've brought in are very good players. We're delighted with that. We just failed to open them up.

Adam Lallana is one of the players Rodgers brought in during the summer, and after a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury, he made his Liverpool debut on Saturday. Per the Liverpool Echo's James Pearce, the excitement of making his Anfield debut was overshadowed by the loss:
"It felt good to get 60 minutes under my belt, but it still can’t take away the feeling of a defeat.
I still feel a little bit rusty but I felt better as the game went on.
The lads are down and disappointed and we know we’ve got to bounce back quickly.
"
No one can blame Lallana for being rusty in his return to the pitch in the same way that no one can blame the Reds for looking flat and uninspired against Villa.
With Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge both not fit to make the starting XI, two of the club's top creators were missing, and it was up to some of the new signings to press their advantage. The likes of Lazar Markovic and Mario Balotelli did everything they could, but the result was unimpressive.
Fans shouldn't worry—it was only to be expected. After a summer with so much turnover, some early struggles are natural. Players like Markovic, Javier Manquillo, Alberto Moreno and Emre Can will need time to adapt to the Premier League and even more to grow into the kind of options Rodgers envisions.

You can mask inexperience to a certain level, but on Saturday, the Reds just had too many new faces on the pitch. Of the four starting forwards, three joined the club during the summer. It shouldn't come as a surprise they failed to handle Villa's strong defensive effort, or that the inclusion of Sterling brought the squad back to life.
Moreno's debut against Manchester City was excellent until he committed a dreadful error that led to a goal from Stevan Jovetic. The Spaniard will make plenty more mistakes like that in his first season with the Reds, but it's pivotal he makes them now—he'll learn from them.
The Reds are going to be inconsistent in 2014-15. They're extremely talented, and when everything's clicking, they have the potential to make any team look bad, like they did against Tottenham.

But there will also be days like Saturday, and it's pointless to hold it against Rodgers or the squad. Young players need to mature, and the only place where they can do it is on the pitch. The Liverpool project was always meant to be one of long-term success—sometimes, short-term success will have to be sacrificed.
The Reds will bounce back from the loss and likely take their frustrations out on Ludogorets in the UEFA Champions League. It's great to see the club back on the biggest stage in football, and it will provide this young squad with more valuable learning experience.
The 2014-15 season looks like it could be a roller-coaster year for Liverpool, and that's fine. Once the new faces get settled in and find their place in the squad, those lackluster performances will become less frequent.
Reds fans know the meaning of the word patience, and they'll need a ton of it in 2014-15. Given the amount of talent the team brought in during the summer, that patience will be rewarded soon enough.
