Tom Watson, You're an Amazing Man
Tom Watson, you're an amazing man.
You're incredible.
There you were Friday, the 36-hole co-leader of the 138th Open Championship with Steve Marino.
There you were, overcoming early problems in your round, working your way back to a heroic 70 after your mind-boggling 65 on Thursday.
There you were, making bombs for putts at 16 and 18 to prove that you are once again, so very amazing.
Do we have to remind you that you'll be 60 in September?
I can remember talking to you in the locker room at the 1977 U.S. Open at Southern Hills in Tulsa. I was a young, enthusiastic golf writer and you were the young, enthusiastic golf star. Less than 30 days after that, you made history with your win over Jack Nicklaus on this same Ailsa course.
It's so very hard to believe that you're still out there working these young guys over in a major.
You're out there grinding like you're 27 again.
Tom, you're almost 60 for goodness sakes.
But there you are, smiling as you walk these fairways at Turnberry once again.
Seems like yesterday that you holed that bomb of a putt at 15 on your way to your second Open title.
But it's not 1977, it's 2009 and you're still amazing.
You have put your name on the Claret Jug five times. Only one man, Harry Vardon, won it six times.
Perhaps, just perhaps, if the stars align and that putter of yours keeps working, the improbable might be possible.
Could it?
You sat in the on-site studio Friday and held the Claret Jug, looked at it, and told Jim Huber of TNT:
"Maybe I can make one more memory."
Tom, that would simply be beyond amazing!
