Oklahoma Football: What You Should and Shouldn't Be Concerned About After Week 2

Sebastian LenaSep 11, 2014

Two weeks into the college football season, we're really able to get a good grasp of what to expect from the Oklahoma Sooners.

Thus far, the team has dominated its two opponents and has looked the part of a national title contender. Even still, there are some areas on the field that have some Sooners fans worrying.

It all raises the question: Should we be concerned or not?

Here is the breakdown on five of those issues.

Shouldn't: CB Zack Sanchez's Injury

You can finally breathe, Sooners fans.

With the game clearly in hand last Saturday, cornerback Zack Sanchez suffered a shoulder injury. He left the game and didn't return, raising concern that the sophomore wouldn't be ready to go for this weekend's matchup.

Thankfully, Sanchez should be all set to go, per The Oklahoman's Jason Kersey

"I got a helmet to the top of my shoulder, where the most padding is on my shoulder pad," Sanchez said, via Kersey. "It's kind of a freak thing. Nothing serious, nothing major at all."

Having Sanchez back is huge for Oklahoma. The Fort Worth, Texas, native has been a key playmaker in the secondary, intercepting a pass in each of his last four games.

Look for Sanchez to continue to be disruptive against Tennessee.

Should: Trevor Knight's Deep Ball

2 of 5

Although quarterback Trevor Knight hasn't been called upon to put the team on his back yet, it's clear he's had some early struggles.

Through two games, the redshirt sophomore has thrown for 552 yards, three touchdowns and an interception while rushing for another 52 yards and a score. But the main area of concern has to be his 58.8 percent completion rate, which is lower than his 59 percent rate last season.

More specifically, Knight hasn't been able to deliver accurate passes on the deep balls. The passes typically are overthrown or off target.

Maybe it's Knight trying to build chemistry with new wide receivers—the Sooners lost three of their top four receivers. Or maybe it's something else all together.

According to Knight, it could be nothing more than nerves.

"I've definitely had to work on [calming down]," he said, per Kersey. "I tend to get a little juiced up back there. In high school, I tried to make plays all the time. I just have to relax and take my footwork, see it and deliver the ball."

Whatever it is, Knight must get it together soon, as Oklahoma's schedule begins to heat up.

Shouldn't: Depth at Linebacker

Gastelum has been a surprise for OU this season.
Gastelum has been a surprise for OU this season.

After suspending linebacker Frank Shannon, the Sooners were left with a void at the position.

There were high hopes for Jordan Evans to step in and make a difference. However, after getting off to a good start in the season opener—two tackles and a forced fumble—the sophomore was ejected for targeting.

That's when walk-on Caleb Gastelum stepped in and led the way. The senior finished with three tackles in the opener and backed that up with a stellar performance against Tulsa, recording a career-high eight tackles along with his first interception and sack.

Following the game, head coach Bob Stoops rewarded Gastelum with a scholarship, per The Associated Press' Cliff Brunt (via NCAA.com).

Although the loss of Shannon has been noticeable this season for Oklahoma, Gastelum and Evans should do more than enough at the position.

Should: Michiah Quick's Disappearing Act

4 of 5

Michiah Quick was easily one of the bigger highlights of the Sooners' 2014 recruiting class.

A 4-star prospect out of Fresno, California, Quick was supposed to help out a depleted receiving corps. Instead, the true freshman has been nonexistent thus far, only having a single kick return of 13 yards to his name.

With incredible athleticism and explosiveness, Quick has the ability to take it to the house every time he touches the ball. What he lacks in size—6'0", 170 pounds—he makes up for with his speed.

One has to hope that Stoops and the coaching staff simply don't want to show their hand until the level of competition rises. Otherwise, they might as well redshirt the talented playmaker.

Shouldn't: Tight End Production

Bell (right) has looked sharp early on.

It seems to be a question nearly every season in recent years: Who do the Sooners have contributing at tight end?

But just when all hope for a reliable option began to fade, Blake Bell stepped up. Strangely, the senior played the majority of his career in Norman at quarterback.

Still, don't let that play down the talents of Bell. After going without a catch in the season opener, Bell not only recorded his first career reception against Tulsa, but he also brought in his first touchdown.

For those keeping score at home, that marked the third different way Bell has scored for Oklahoma. We're not holding our breath for a field goal or PAT anytime soon.

All in all, it seems the Sooners have found their tight end.
