Matt FitzgeraldSep 10, 2014

Updates from Sunday, Oct. 5

Bart Starr's wife, Cherry, posted a statement on Packers.com discussing her husband's health status and recovery:

"

Bart and I have enjoyed all of the sweet cards and messages from packers.com. Your kindness has been so encouraging and we are grateful for your concern. Many have asked for an update and we now have enough information to share. Bart’s doctors have confirmed on Tuesday, September 2nd he suffered an ischemic stroke followed on September 7th by a hemorrhagic stroke and a mild heart attack. His progress was additionally slowed by seizures which now are under control through medication. Although there have been many bumps in the road over the past several weeks, we remain optimistic for Bart’s quality of life going forward, as he is becoming medically stable and beginning to make progress through rehabilitation. Our family appreciates your prayers and patience while Bart takes the necessary time to recover. We love you all.

It was revealed Wednesday that legendary Green Bay Packers quarterback Bart Starr suffered a mild stroke last week and is making strides in his recovery.

The Packers' official Twitter account sent well-wishes and provided a promising prognosis for Starr moving forward:

The team's post links to the complete statement from the Starr family, via the Packers' official website:

"

Last week Bart Starr suffered a mild ischemic stroke, but is very functional and making progress every day. He is in the care of his physicians and therapists, and will be released as soon as he regains his strength. Bart's doctors are confident for a full recovery. We remain grateful for your love and concern.

"

Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel noted the optimistic outlook of all parties involved regarding Starr's status:

Starr, 80, was the NFL MVP in 1966, made it to four Pro Bowls and was the MVP of the first two Super Bowls ever played, leading the Vince Lombardi-coached Packers to victories in both games. Those accolades were plenty enough to ensure Starr a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 1977.

As one of the most important contributors to the Green Bay franchise's history, Starr led the charge that helped put the Packers on the map as the perpetual first-class organization the players and fans have the utmost affection for today.

Although Starr had a nine-year coaching stint in Green Bay that wasn't as successful as his playing career, it didn't diminish his legacy. His No. 15 is one of only five numbers the Packers have ever retired.

Thankfully, it appears Starr is on track to be released from medical care in the near future. Until then, all we can do is wish one of pro football's all-time greats a swift and full recovery.
