Bayern Munich Transfer News and Rumours Tracker: Week of September 8

Stefan BienkowskiSep 8, 2014

Bayern Munich may be well underway in their pursuit of another Bundesliga title, yet rumours of future transfers and player upset still seem to beset the club.

With a squad the size of this one, the Bavarian club and its coach, Pep Guardiola, face a constant struggle to keep egos happy and young players committed to waiting on the sidelines.

The transfer window may well be shut, but that doesn't mean these German giants have concluded their transfer business.

Let's take a look at all the news and rumours surrounding the club this week.

—Last updated: Tuesday September 9—

Franck Ribery

In one of the most bizarre stories in recent months, Bayern winger Franck Ribery may now face a club ban after retiring from international football for the French national team.

The attacking midfielder ruled himself out of the World Cup this summer as he received treatment on a lower back injury, only to then announce his retirement from the team altogether so he could focus on his career in Munich.

What has then followed is really beyond belief. UEFA president Michel Platini stated on Sunday, as reported by The Independent on Monday September 8, that the player could not decided on his own whether to play for the national side, or indeed retire.

In an interview with German paper Bild, but later translated by the London paper, Platini states:

"If coach Didier Deschamps calls him up he must come to the national team. If he does not show up he will be suspended for three Bayern Munich games."

The club did then utter a response through an interview in Bild with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, which was translated and published by Spanish paper Marca on September 8, stating;

"Everything is quite clear. Just as Philip Lahm has spoken to [Joachim] Löwe about his retirement, similarly Franck has done with [Didier] Deschamps. He will no longer be called up. Everything is in order and in line with FIFA"

Xherdan Shaqiri

One player who could well appreciate Ribery getting a few bans is young attacking midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri.

The Swiss international has struggled to pick up any consistent first-team football of late and as such has been the topic of plenty of rumours within the English press linking him with a move to Premier League side Liverpool

It was The Daily Express on Sunday, September 7, who reported that Brendan Rodgers' side failed to sign the young midfielder over the summer but could well be interested again, following Shaqiri's reluctance to quieten speculation of his departure from Munich.

The paper quoted Shaqiri ahead of his international side's clash with England, as he stated:

“My contract runs until 2016 and I could possibly extend it. I will consider my decision during the winter break.”

As such, speculation is likely to continue on throughout the rest of the year before some sort of conclusion is finally reached in the following transfer window.
