Brazil vs. Argentina: TV Info, Live Stream and Preview for FIBA World Cup 2014

Tim KeeneySep 7, 2014

On the international basketball stage, Brazil and Argentina are traveling in opposite directions.

Argentina is simply trying to extend its golden age for just a little bit longer. The South American squad won gold at the 2004 Olympic Games, bronze in 2008, finished second at the 2002 FIBA World Cup and has never placed below fifth at either tournament in the last decade.

But Manu Ginobili, who was so important in establishing Argentina as a world basketball power, isn't on the team, while Father Time is chipping away at Luis Scola, Pablo Prigioni, Walter Herrmann and Andres Nocioni.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, Brazil didn't qualify for the Olympics from 2000 through 2008 and finished eighth, 19th and ninth at the last three FIBA World Cups, but they came in fifth at the Summer Games in London and will be a legitimate medal favorite as hosts in 2016.

Still, these two sides have produced some memorable battles recently, which should ring true Sunday even as their identities continue to change.

Let's take a look at everything you need to know about the round-of-16 matchup.

Date: Sunday, September 7, 2014

Time: 4 p.m. ET; 10 p.m. local

Location: Community of Madrid Sports Center, Madrid, Spain

TV: NBA TV

Live Stream: ESPN3

It wouldn't be a major international tournament without Brazil vs. Argentina. At the World Cup in 2010, Argentina topped Brazil, 93-89. Two years later at the Olympic Games in London, Argentina again prevailed in a close battle, 82-77.

NBA.com's John Schuhmann put it simply:

Luis Scola knows things will be different this time around, though, via FIBA.com:

"

The last game doesn't really matter. They will forget and we will forget. It's four years in between. It's going to be a completely different story. We have to find a way to forget about that game and play the right way.

"

Scola, who saw his minutes decrease significantly as a rotational player with the Indiana Pacers last season, has looked like a completely different player with his Argentina jersey on. Through five games, the big man is averaging 21.6 points on 52.0 percent shooting, 8.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 0.6 steals per contest.

He has carried Argentina, a team that has no one else averaging double-digit scoring, but it's going to get significantly more difficult against Brazil.

In Nene, Tiago Splitter and Anderson Varejao, Ruben Magnano features one of the best frontcourts in the world. None of the trio are consistent go-to scorers, but they are all physical big men who rebound and play terrific interior defense.

Scola has the shooting touch that can take them away from the basket, which is an advantage, but scoring with his back to the basket is going to be more difficult. As such, don't expect him to be nearly as efficient as he has been so far in Spain.

No matter what happens, though, we know we're in store for an entertaining battle.

"We've been playing games against that team for ever," said Scola. "It's almost like destiny. They want us to play. I don’t know why. Those are all good matches, all fun. We just have to find a way to win."

In the last two tournaments, "destiny" has pointed towards Argentina. But the past is the past, and times are changing for both of these teams.

With a stacked frontcourt and Leandrinho Barbosa at the top of his game, Brazil will progress to the quarterfinals.

Prediction: Argentina 63-66 Brazil
