NFL Odds Week 1: Breakdown of Latest Lines for Every Regular-Season Opener

Steven CookSep 5, 2014

The preseason was a nice appetizer, but the Super Bowl champion Seahawks beating the Packers on Thursday night was the first full entree of a 17-week meal that will be the 2014 NFL season.

As expected, Seattle took care of business at home over its NFC competition just like Las Vegas predicted. But we've learned throughout seasons past just how insignificant certain lines can be when the games are actually played.

Let's break down all of the Week 1 lines and look closer at the most intriguing ones.

Intriguing Week 1 Lines

Indianapolis Colts at Denver Broncos (-9)

Broncos lines understandably tend to be distorted after a crazy 2013 season, but this one is nonetheless surprising for a matchup between two AFC heavyweights.

Peyton Manning will go up against his former team in Week 1, this time at home as he looks to improve to 1-1 all time in games against the Colts. But all he has to do is remember how his return to Lucas Oil Stadium went to realize a nine-point advantage in Vegas doesn't mean much.

Andrew Luck's crew topped the Broncos at home last year, and they're threatening to improve even more in 2014 after making the playoffs each of the last two seasons. If Luck continues to ascend and the defense starts this year like they closed out the last, they could end up stealing a first-round bye away from the Patriots or—gasp—even the Broncos.

How some of Manning's new weapons mesh on offense will be critical to Denver's success on Sunday night and throughout 2014. Emmanuel Sanders was brought in to replace Eric Decker, and he could play a larger role with Wes Welker suspended four games, per Denver Post's Mike Klis. Montee Ball is also set to become the feature back after Knowshon Moreno left for Miami.

If Indianapolis' defense clamps down late like it did against Manning a year ago, that nine-point line is going to look like an awfully large line. But if he starts this season like he did the last, it might not be big enough.

Cleveland Browns at Pittsburgh Steelers (-7)

The Steelers finished out last season much better than they started it, and the oddsmakers are taking that into account as well as the Browns' shortcomings in this Week 1 divisional matchup.

Pittsburgh began the 2013 season 0-4 and fell to 2-6 before it rattled off six of eight to finish out the year. Ben Roethlisberger turned his year around after starting horribly, and Le'Veon Bell got healthy late to become an impact rusher.

The Browns, on the other hand, struggled mightily in 2014 after Brian Hoyer suffered a season-ending ACL tear. The drafting of Johnny Manziel created massive hype for the season, but Hoyer has remained the team's starter, and a year-long suspension of Josh Gordon has helped to temper 2014 expectations.

New Cleveland running back Ben Tate should have success despite going up against a Steelers run defense that finished in the top half of the league last year. But the offensive line is a work in progress, and Hoyer's weapons in the passing game are few and far between.

If Dick LeBeau's defense clamps down on Hoyer and keeps the run game stagnant, expect the Steelers to cover the spread.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Philadelphia Eagles (-11)

Everybody and their mother is high on Chip Kelly's Eagles entering 2014, at least in a Week 1 test that is about as fortunate as you can get in today's NFL—hosting the Jaguars.

Nick Foles took the starting quarterback job and ran with it last year in Philadelphia, and Kelly has rewarded him over the offseason by adding weapons like Darren Sproles in free agency and Jordan Matthews in the draft to negate the loss of DeSean Jackson. LeSean McCoy figures to be as dangerous in 2014 as he has ever been.

The defensive woes are apparent still in Philly, but they shouldn't be too much of a problem against Jacksonville. Chad Henne enters the season as the starter, but Blake Bortles isn't far behind, and a lack of serious offensive weapons makes the rebuilding process look like it's in its early stages.

Gus Bradley's Jaguars might surprise some people this season, and there would be no better way to do so than with an impressive Week 1 showing against the Eagles. Should they even keep it close, it will give Jacksonville some momentum entering a sure-to-be brutal 2014 season.
