England vs. India: Player Ratings for Alastair Cook's Team After 2014 ODI Series

Chris TealeSep 5, 2014

England’s disappointing one-day international series at home to India is now at an end, with the hosts having been defeated by a final margin of 3-1.

A number of players did not enjoy a great series, while a few managed to have some good moments amid what was a poor showing for the home side.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at how each player rated in the series, in ascending order.

All stats courtesy of ESPNCricinfo.

Chris Jordan: 2

1 of 15

1 match; 0 runs; 0 batting average; 0 highest score
0 wickets

Chris Jordan played just one game for England and did poorly as he scored no runs and could not get his bowling under control.

His 10 overs went for 73 runs in Cardiff as India thrashed their way past 300.

Harry Gurney: 3

2 of 15

1 match; 3 runs; 3.00 batting average; 3 highest score
1 wicket; 51.00 bowling average; 1-51 BBI

Just the one game for left-arm seamer Harry Gurney, and it was not a good one as he saw his bowling thrashed around Edgbaston.

His time will likely come again, but it was a poor showing for the 27-year-old.

James Anderson: 3

3 of 15

4 matches; 10 runs; no batting average; 9* highest score
2 wickets; 81.50 bowling average; 2-39 BBI

Wicketless in three games, James Anderson will be tremendously disappointed with his return this series.

With Stuart Broad out having surgery, he will have wanted to lead the bowling attack more effectively but he was unable to do very much at all.

Gary Ballance: 3

4 of 15

1 match; 7 runs; 7.00 batting average; 7 highest score

Another to play just once was Gary Ballance, who failed to translate his good Test form into the ODI arena.

He came in at No. 3 at Edgbaston and played a torturous innings, although he may well get further chances if England shake up their team selection.

Ian Bell: 4

5 of 15

2 matches; 29 runs; 14.50 batting average; 28 highest score

Ian Bell managed just two matches in this series before succumbing to injury, and he will be disappointed to not have contributed more runs.

Coming in at the top of the order, Bell looked ineffective and unable to get his side off to a good start.

Eoin Morgan: 4

6 of 15

4 matches; 84 runs; 21.00 batting average; 32 highest score

Looking out of form throughout, Eoin Morgan had plenty of chances to impress but failed to do so.

A very talented batsman when on song, his plight in this series just about summed up the problems England had against their visitors.

Ben Stokes: 4

7 of 15

3 matches; 58 runs; 29.00 batting average; 33* highest score
4 wickets; 33.00 bowling average; 3-47 BBI

Having lost his way in international cricket recently, Ben Stokes came back for this series and gave a couple of encouraging performances.

He was somewhat effective with bat and ball at times, and he will be determined to force his way back in on a more permanent basis.

James Tredwell: 4

8 of 15

3 matches; 48 runs; 24.00 batting average; 30 highest score
3 wickets; 41.00 bowling average; 2-42 BBI

A consistent performer for England, James Tredwell looked handy with the ball in spite of not taking many wickets.

However, against such adept players of spin, he looked a little limited at times too.

Steven Finn: 4

9 of 15

3 matches; 8 runs; 4.00 batting average; 6 highest score
3 wickets; 41.66 bowling average; 2-37 BBI

Perhaps one of the biggest positives for England this series was the return of Steven Finn to international cricket.

He may well still be feeling his way back, but his occasional wickets showed he can perhaps return to how he was before the traumatic tour of Australia last winter.

Chris Woakes: 5

10 of 15

4 matches; 54 runs; 13.50 batting average; 20 highest score
5 wickets; 39.20 bowling average; 4-52 BBI

Chris Woakes is clearly held in high regard by England’s management, and at times he hinted at what he is capable of.

His 4-52 in Cardiff showed his ability with the ball, and although he is still young in international terms, he will need some big performances to show he is worthy of his spot.

Jos Buttler: 5

11 of 15

4 matches; 104 runs; 26.00 batting average; 49 highest score

This was a poor series for wicket-keeper Jos Buttler, who struggled to assert himself with the bat in his usual aggressive manner.

He is the man in possession of the gloves and his place is likely safe, but this was a poor return for the Lancashire man.

Alastair Cook: 5

12 of 15

4 matches; 118 runs; 29.50 batting average; 46 highest score

Although he was one of just three players to pass 100 runs for England, that should not mask the deficiencies in Alastair Cook’s game in the shorter formats.

With a poor strike rate and unable to get his side off to a good start, calls are mounting for him to step aside and on the strength of this series perhaps he should.

Alex Hales: 5

13 of 15

4 matches; 92 runs; 23.00 batting average; 42 highest score

Making his debut in ODIs, this was a decent start for Alex Hales, although at times he did not play his usual destructive game.

Perhaps he was nervous, but he has to be given much more free rein if he is to impress in this format as he does in Twenty20s.

Moeen Ali: 6

14 of 15

2 matches; 76 runs; 38.00 batting average; 67 highest score
2 wickets; 37.00 bowling average; 2-34 BBI

Brought in for two games was Moeen Ali, who was something of a breath of fresh air for a beleaguered England side.

His 67 at Edgbaston hinted at what he is capable of, and is an example that his teammates would do well to follow.

Joe Root: 6

15 of 15

4 matches; 163 runs; 40.75 batting average; 113 highest score
0 wickets

The only England batsman to pass 100 in one stand, Joe Root managed to look pretty impressive in spite of those around him.

He is clearly a very important part of his side’s lineup, although he needs to be a little more consistent in this format.
