10 Reasons Liverpool Fans Laugh at Roy Hodgson as England Manager
Roy Hodgson is upset with the English media following criticism of England's 1-0 win over Norway on Tuesday night.
He told reporters:
"I am entitled to [be annoyed], aren't I? When you have questions like: 'You had only two shots on target ...' We can't get rid of the baggage, we can't change the fact we had a bad World Cup, we can't play those games against Italy and Uruguay again, but I think you will have to give me the entitlement at least.
"
The key word there being entitlement. Which was the exact reasoning behind an article from This Is Anfield back during Hodgson's time as Liverpool manager. That article showed exactly how Hodgson blamed everyone but himself for Liverpool's 13 wins and 10 defeats during his 31 games in charge.
Hodgson left Liverpool with a negative goal difference in the Premier League during his short time in charge. A quite incredible fact.
Liverpool fans have no sympathy for Hodgson, England or England supporters, and here are 10 reasons why.
His Methods Don't Translate
1 of 10
Roy Hodgson thought that his coaching techniques used while with Swedish side Malmo in the 1980s translated to being Liverpool's manager in the 21st century.
Speaking in October 2010, Hodgson was furious with reporters questioning him, via Rory Smith of The Telegraph:
"How many clubs have I had in 35 years? What do you mean, do my methods translate? They translated from Halmstads to Malmo to Orebro to Neuchatel Xamax to the Swiss national team.
The question is quite frankly insulting, I suppose.
"
Yes, 35 years of management, never wining a major honour in a top European country, but don't you dare question him.
Up There with the Best: In His Own Words
2 of 10
Outside of Scandinavia, Roy Hodgson has never won a major trophy.
Alex Ferguson has won 13 Premier League titles and two European Cups, among others.
Yet Hodgson thinks he is in the same category as Ferguson. In his own words (quotes via Paul Brown of The Daily Star): "My track record, if people bothered to study it, would put me in the same category as [Sir Alex] Ferguson enjoys today, but people don’t talk about what I've done outside England."
For the record, here's his record outside England, as listed on his Wikipedia page:
"Halmstads BK
- Allsvenskan (2): 1976, 1979
Orebro SK
- Division 2 North (1) 1984
Malmo FF

Clearly in the same category there.
'No Qualms' over 2-0 Merseyside Derby Defeat
3 of 10
After a 2-0 defeat in the Merseyside derby, Hodgson said, via John Edwards of the Daily Mail: "It's just unfortunate that such a good game of football, a real credit to the Premier League, will revolve round the fact that Liverpool did not win."
Yes, here we were thinking that winning games was what football was about.
Doesn't Want to Work in Norway or Denmark Again
4 of 10
Liverpool have a huge fanbase in Scandinavia, where Hodgson—in his own words—has enjoyed success as a manager.
But that didn't stop him from being disrespectful of Norway and Denmark in a post-match press conference after that derby defeat.
Chris Bascombe of The Telegraph explains:
"It was following a 2-0 defeat in the Merseyside derby when a Scandinavian journalist quizzed Hodgson on the poor service to his strikers.
Hodgson gave the inquisitor a stare before asking if the journalist was from Denmark. 'No. I'm from Norway,' was the response.
As Hodgson made his exit from the Goodison press room, he swiped back: 'They are two countries I never want to work in again.'

'Famous' Win: At Bolton
5 of 10
"Today was a famous victory because we hadn't won more than once away in the whole of 2010," Roy Hodgson said to Sky Sports (h/t James Cone of Bloomberg) after a 1-0 win for Liverpool at Bolton that lifted them to a heady 12th place.
He Signed Paul Konchesky
6 of 10
Not only did Hodgson sign Paul Konchesky for Liverpool, he also said this, per The Guardian:
"There aren't many quality left-backs around in the world, never mind in England—so to find an English one who can go straight into the team without any adjustment problems is a big advantage.
"
Spent £10m on Meireles, Didn't Know Where to Play Him
7 of 10
Hodgson also signed Portuguese midfielder Raul Meireles for £10 million. Not that he knew where he was going to play him, as this quote from the Mirror revealed:
"He (Meireles) had two training sessions and played on Thursday night and he played again on Sunday so it is very early for me to make strong judgements about where his best position is. The work we do on the training field will show me how best to use him.
"
Attempted to Sign Carlton Cole for Liverpool
8 of 10
Hodgson wanted to sign Carlton Cole for Liverpool.
No, we're not joking.
He was willing to pay £7 million for him, according to the Daily Mail.
Cole would have added to summer signings of Konchesky, Christian Poulsen, Joe Cole and Brad Jones at Anfield.
Tested Sturridge's 'Resolve'
9 of 10
This one isn't funny, but it is laughable that an England manager would say and do such a thing.
Hodgson is a manager who claims he tested Daniel Sturridge's "resolve" by playing the forward while not fully fit, per Sam Wallace of The Independent.
Speaking last December, Hodgson said: "It was important for me to test his resolve a little bit. I might have been guilty of putting that resolve to the test, but I don't apologise for it."
Sturridge has picked up injuries three times while on international duty for Hodgson.
'Hodgson for England'—We Were Only Joking!

After Liverpool lost 1-0 at home to the Wolverhampton Wanderers in December 2010, "ironic chants of 'Hodgson for England'" could be heard throughout the stadium, as reported by the Daily Mail.
