FIBA World Cup 2014: TV Schedule, Live Stream, Bracket Predictions for Day 7

Sean ODonnellSep 6, 2014

Six days and 60 games later, the group stage is complete and only 16 teams remain in the 2014 FIBA World Cup. For one team, only four more victories remain before it will be crowned tournament champion. While dominant squads like the United States and Spain are favorites to go the distance, anything can happen in single-elimination format.

Rest assured, there's some extremely compelling basketball on the way.

Four games are set to take place on Saturday, and the current field of 16 will quickly dwindle down to 12. Based on what we've seen from each team through five games, we can begin to formulate an idea of which are likeliest to advance. While we wait for some more on-court drama in Spain, let's take a look at the full Day 7 schedule and predict the outcome of each contest.

Prediction Analysis

United States vs. Mexico

This is simply a mismatch. The Americans have an enormously deep team—both starters and bench players have made big impacts in each of the team's five contests. Currently, the United States leads the tournament in points per game (102.2), field-goal percentage (54.0), rebounds per game (42.0), assists per game (23.0) and steals per game (15.6). That's the epitome of dominance.

Here's a quick glimpse of one of the things the Americans do so well, via USA Basketball:

While Mexico has seen some nice production from Gustavo Ayon—he leads the team with 15.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game—the team just isn't deep enough to remain competitive with the Americans.

France vs. Croatia

This is an intriguing matchup between two very different teams. France has been one of the tournament's best shooting teams—through five games it's boasting a 50.9 field-goal percentage, which is good enough to rank fourth. On the flip side, Croatia is a top-10 team down low, averaging 35.0 rebounds per game.

This contest's deciding factor could be how well Croatia fares inside against France's Joffrey Lauvergne. He's averaging 10.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. If Croatia can keep him in check, and get some looks to Dario Saric, it will come away with a victory.

The Philadelphia 76ers must be pretty happy with what they've seen from Saric in the World Cup:

Dominican Republic vs. Slovenia

The Dominican Republic hasn't exactly been the most consistent team through the group stage, but it is highly underrated in the rebound department, averaging 41.0 boards per game—second to only the United States. Winning the game down low is the one way this team can come away with an upset over Slovenia.

Slovenia is a far superior shooting team—its hitting 51.0 percent of its shots, ranking third in the tournament—while the Dominican Republic is only shooting 42.9 percent. If Slovenia doesn't lose the rebound battle to terribly, its shooting should be able to carry it to a decisive win.

Spain vs. Senegal

It would be rather difficult for Senegal to keep up with either Pau Gasol, Marc Gasol or Serge Ibaka, but having to contend with all three will simply turn into a nightmare. This has dominated each contest through the group stage, with Pau averaging 21.2 points per game while Marc and Ibaka take care of business on the defensive side.

Ethan Strauss of ESPN.com tweeted his thoughts on Pau during the team's fifth game:

Senegal does have a great player in Gorgui Dieng—he leads the team with an average of 18.0 points and 11.4 rebounds per game—however, the lack of depth behind him, with the possible exemption of Mouhammad Faye, will be troublesome against the very talented Spaniards.
