Premier League: Harry Kane Has What It Takes to Become Spurs Hero

Trevor MurraySep 10, 2014

Following a hectic few days that saw him rule out plying his international trade with the Republic of Ireland, Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane has seen himself set his sights high—a trait that the best of the best all share in common with each other.

And while this desire doesn't bring with it all the trappings of success and glory, it does provide the young striker with the bare essentials to help him get where he wants to be. It also leaves Irish fans a little stressed out as to who'll fill former Spurs player Robbie Keane's boots in the long run, but that's a discussion for another day.

Fortunate in that the North London club's forward line isn't over-crowded or weighed down with too many options, the 21-year-old from Chingford will already have a clear view of exactly what he can achieve, both personally and for the club.

Plucked from relative obscurity last season under the stewardship of former Blackburn Rovers captain Tim Sherwood, Kane was seen as a stopgap that could help fire Tottenham up the table, hoping to capitalise on what was a staggering performance from other clubs.

An to his credit, he stood up immensely well to the gauntlet thrown down to him and has kept going.

But now he finds himself standing on the brink of a chance at becoming his side's main striker. And it's unlikely he'll let the opportunity pass him by without giving it his all.

Already he's started this season in a promising fashion. In particular, his display in the second-leg tie of the Europa League against AEL Limassol was a fantastic exposition of his talents. Because, although he missed a penalty early on, the young English striker rallied himself and the whole team to fight back and make sure they didn't suffer an implosion of nerves on the night.

They got the job done, and Kane was a major determining factor in that with his well-taken brace.

But it's clear that manager Mauricio Pochettino, although he firmly believes in Kane's ability and potential, views him as a protege in waiting who still needs to show a little more before he can dethrone his first-choice striker, Emmanuel Adebayor.

As reported by International Business Times writer Nick Howson, Pochettino expressed a great deal of public faith in him following their latest European outing.

"

I always believe in Harry. That's football. It is possible to miss the penalty but it is not important. The important thing is, he follows the ball to score and did not let it affect his performance. It was good. He always showed the character. He is very strong-minded and he is a very good player too.

"

And if there's one thing a young player needs, it's the comfortable and supportive surroundings of a manager and club that fully believe in him. Because the England U-21 star clearly already believes in himself.

Impressing for Gareth Southgate's charges in the European Championships, Kane has been feeling the good vibes with some fantastic finishing. He recently scored against Moldova and hit the back of the net against Lithuania.

And Southgate, too, has been touting him as someone who is not only budding but also proving his worth.

According to the Daily Mail's Dominic King, the former Middlesbrough boss expressed how Kane can add versatility and resourcefulness to any side's play, something that former Spurs legend Robbie Keane used to bring by the boatload.

"

He is really knocking on the door now. We put him on at that stage of the game when they were tiring and he gave us different options. He is a penalty box player and it was a very good finish. I’m pleased we were able to get the job done.

"

All the pointers indicate that Kane can reach the lofty heights youthful strikers dream of. He has the natural goal-poacher's ability, the drive to succeed in the most exciting league there is as well as the promising form to thrive in tough conditions and take the big opportunities that drift his way.

A league start against Sunderland this Saturday would be a just reward for his recent good form.

After all, the path to becoming a club hero might not be easy, but it's a journey Spurs fans will certainly enjoy watching unfold.
