NBA Las Vegas Summer League: Vol. 2
(Above: Curry made a big impression in his second game.)
The young men of the NBA were at it again in Las Vegas, as several players delivered solid second-game performances, erasing doubts after questionable efforts in their debuts.
Due to continued solid performances (and growing), the selections of players listed will be limited to a minimum of 15 points, along with at least a solid stat sheet line.
After all, it is just summer league, right?
However, one important point to consider is that these top performers are delivering good efforts, instead of showing up with one-for-eight shooting and no stats to fill up the box score.
Regardless of whether or not their summer league success translates to the NBA regular season, these guys deserve some notice.
Read on to see who could be worth tracking heading into the 2009-2010 NBA season:
DeMar DeRozan, SG, Toronto Raptors
DeRozan had a solid all-around game, as he showed decent shooting ability, and was more aggressive offensively than he was in his debut.
Final line: 20 Pts, 4 Reb
Quincy Douby, G, Toronto Raptors
Douby improved on his 16-point effort in game one, as he showed again his great offensive ability, while also hitting the boards and doing a better job at leading the team.
Final line: 21 Pts, 5 Reb, 3 Ast
Austin Daye, F, Detroit Pistons
Many people were down on Daye's stock entering the draft, but in the summer league, he's done nothing but impress.
He's proving to be a fine shooter, and is more aggressive on both sides of the court than he was in college, showing obvious maturity and a strong work ethic.
Final line: 19 Pts, 8 Reb
DaJuan Summers, F, Detroit Pistons
Summers is proving with every strong game that he's just the type of player Detroit loves, as he's extremely active at all times, and puts in great effort on both sides of the court.
Final line: 19 Pts, 6 Reb
Adam Morrison, G/F, Los Angeles Lakers
Perhaps Morrison could have a future with L.A. after all. While it is just summer league, Morrison is still displaying a re-born offensive confidence, as well as an aggressive overall game.
His approach to the rest of his game is obviously one of strong determination, and his strong work ethic is showing in his first two games.
Morrison shot at least 50 percent for the second straight game, as he also went 4-6 from beyond the arch.
Final line: 22 Pts, 4 Reb, 3 Ast
Anthony Randolph, F, Golden State Warriors
Randolph has continued to impress with his tough and athletic play. His stature is very misleading, as his length and tenacity makes him a beast on the boards, and his aggressiveness and focus makes him extremely efficient, offensively.
Final line: 24 Pts, 11 Reb, 5 BS, 2 Stl, 2 Ast
Cartier Martin, G/F, Golden State Warriors
Martin has been very impressive offensively, as he's done a terrific job of driving and getting to the line (10-11 on Saturday).
Final line: 27 Pts, 4 Reb
Stephen Curry, G, Golden State Warriors
We're still not seeing the skills or awareness needed for Curry to make the jump to the point at the NBA level, but his scoring ability is clearly there.
While his shot hasn't been falling as well as he'd like, he still made use of his trips to the free throw line on Saturday, and displayed his offensive ability at a high level.
Final line: 29 Pts, 6 Reb, 3 Ast, 2 Stl
Tyreke Evans, G/F, Sacramento Kings
Evans continued his bid to possibly play the point for Sacramento, as he did a terrific job of leading his offense, while also being extremely active all over the court.
An athletic phenom, Evans has the ability to make an impact in every facet of a basketball game and is already showing it.
Final line: 25 Pts, 10 Reb, 5 Ast, 2 Stl
Chase Budinger, G/F, Houston Rockets
After a decent (but mediocre) debut, Budinger made a splash with a huge offensive game in a win over Dallas.
Budinger was extremely effective, shooting 9-10 from the field, and 6-7 from the line. He won't always have nights like this, but his potential is very intriguing.
Surprisingly, though, Budinger was unable to grab more than one of any other stat category in 22 minutes of action.
Final line: 25 Pts, 1 Reb, 1 Ast
Player of the Day: Rodrigue Beaubois, G, Dallas Mavericks
In game one, it was Ahmad Nivins making the big impact for Dallas's 2009 draft picks. In game two, it was Beaubois.
While he had foul issues (nine personal fouls), he was a nightmare to guard on the other side, as he did an excellent job of distributing the ball, as well as scoring.
Final line: 34 Pts, 8 Ast, 5 Reb
