Roger "El Matador" Huerta Returns to UFC

Jessy MorrisJul 13, 2009

Roger "El Matador" Huerta burst on to the UFC scene at UFC 63 where he defeated future TUF Nine contestant Jason Dent. Thanks to his good looks, great performances, and his dark past, Roger Huerta became an immediate fan favorite.

Born on May 20, 1983 in Los Angeles California, Roger moved to El Salvador with his mom at the early age of seven. Due to the Civil war in El Salvador, Roger's mother abandoned him with his grandparents. She returned one year later only to drop the young Roger at his father's doorsteps in Texas.

Mexico was Roger's next stop, as his father brought him there to live with his paternal grandparents, who were in no way able to raise a young boy. Roger Huerta left home and began living in the streets where survival was his only option.

Roger ended up meeting Jo Ramirez and Bryan Ashford, who changed his life forever. Ashford trained Huerta in wrestling and Jo. After hearing of Roger's childhood story, Ashford adopted him.

Roger took up Mixed Martial Arts and packed up an impressive 14-1-2, with his loss coming because of a dislocated jaw. After the win in his UFC debut against Dent, Huerta won his next five fights, elevating his status as one of the most exciting fighters in MMA.

His fight against Leonard Garcia at UFC 69 landed him on the cover of Sports Illustrated and his fight against Clay Guida at the finale of The Ultimate Fighter season six is one of the best fights in UFC history.

Unfortunately, Roger's winning streak was stopped by Kenny Florian at UFC 87 and Roger left the UFC and left MMA behind in hopes of becoming an actor. After one year gone from the UFC, Roger returns at Ultimate Fight Night 19 to fight Gray "The Bully" Maynard.

A lot of people would agree that it's a tough fight to return to considering that Maynard is a very talented fighter who is still undefeated in his MMA career. Gray has defeated some of the top lightweights in the UFC, but a win against the ultra popular Roger Huerta could easily get him the title shot he wants.

Roger has never been used to having a walk in the park since his birth, and this fight against Maynard will be no different. Roger will need to use all his skills to get the win, and a victory here would surely send him right back into a run for the lightweight championship.
