Futbol Chronicles: Manchester City's Pursuit Of John Terry Ambitious

Bleacher ReportJul 12, 2009

Manchester City have shown throughout the entire summer that they are seriously back in business.

The recent news of their attempts to sign star forwards Samuel Eto and Carlos Tevez has only showed football fans and pundits alike the measures of which the City club hierarchy are undertaking to revolutionize the club's fortunes.

John Terry, as an Umbro representative, would make an excellent signing for City if Chelsea were to finally grant Terry's wishes to talking to the club.

Manchester are also chasing local boy Joleon Lescott, who has established himself as a defensive force for Everton, while earning himself a place in the national squad. Both Terry and Lescott in a double swoop for Manchester City would be a major coup to say the least.

With a midfield already intact with Wright-Phillips, Ireland at the helm and with an attack supplemented by Robinho, Santa Cruz, and now with the imminent signing of Carlos Tevez, Manchester City manager Mark Hughes knows a top class defender would complete the summer signing business.

Hughes has coveted Terry and Lescott for some time, and both players would fit nicely into the City mold, not to mention enjoying newer and more expensive contracts at the club.

Terry's willingness to listen to what Mark Hughes has to offer is only a sign of things to come for the club, as Manchester City aim to finally bring themselves up to the upper echelons of English football.

Perhaps this time, cynical footballers, fans, and pundits alike would finally take notice of Manchester City and its ambitions. Perhaps this time, we may see the beginning of a new footballing era in Manchester, with both City and United challenging for honors at the same level—something of which supporters of both clubs have not see in over two decades.

The last time both Manchester clubs battled it out was back in the late sixties, primarily in 1968 when City went on to win the English First Division despite its crosstown rival winning the European Cup weeks later at Wembley.

City went on to enjoy finer sucess during the 1970s while United would go through a decline finally culimating in the 1973-74 season.

Ironically United were relegated from the First Division with a loss against—you guessed it—Manchester City. Adding insult to injury, Denis Law, a former United player, scored the only goal of the match that sealed United's fate that day.

Manchester City are going to be a club to be reckoned with, and one would have to admit that in just a few years time, Manchester football would be the toast of the Premiership if both clubs can sustain their rising forms.

Cheers!
