UFC 100 Results: The Five Bullet Point Recap
Just like that, UFC 100 is in the history books and thus, the fallout, recap and post-event analysis can begin.
In the spirit of our Five Bullet Point preview, enjoy our UFC 100 Five Bullet Point Recap of the five televised fights and the overall event, courtesy of RopesRingCage.com via Bleacher Report.
UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar def. Interim Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir via KO at 1:48 of the second round
- Lesnar looked spectacular in grounding Mir and then, pummeling him into submission.
- How about that post-fight interview by Lesnar? He pulled no punches in calling out Mir, Mir's "horseshoe", Bud Light and even the fans. Best. Promo. Ever. Lesnar did apologize to the 'young viewers' and Bud Light while on ESPN's post-fight show, but the damage was already done. This man knows how to market himself, period.
- I understand why the fans were booing early, but then again, I don't understand it. Show some patience, people!
- Mir's face post-fight can be recapped in one word: raw.
- Who's up for Lesnar next and can they give him a test? The winner of Randy Couture/Rodrigo Nogueira? Shane Carwin? Does attempting to sign Fedor become a priority?
Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre def. Thiago Alves via unanimous decision
- GSP looked good in dominating Alves, but not one of his most exciting fights.
- The next fight for Alves is going to be really important in how he bounces back. He didn't look terrible here, but I'm very intrigued in what happens next for him.
- Goldberg/Rogan really pushed how strong GSP was as a wrestler despite not having any real background in it. Regardless, his apparent Olympic-level abilities showed as he took down Alves at will, upwards of ten times.
- I wonder how much of the weight gain by Alves (possibly 20 pounds in a day) hurt him here. Weight cutting is a tightrope for fighters and the subsequent gain can be a detriment as well as an advantage.
- Like Lesnar above, what does GSP do for an encore? He seemed hesitant when asked about jumping to 185, but will a match against Mike Swick, Martin Kampmann, or a Jon Fitch rematch be motivation enough for him to stay at welterweight?
Dan Henderson def. Michael Bisping via KO at 3:20 of the second round
- Who thought going in that the mild-mannered Henderson would have the most exciting punch of the night, earning him $100k for Knockout of the Night?
- Post-fight, Henderson made it clear that he wanted to shut Bisping up and with that final blow to the sleeping Brit, he certainly did. Ouch.
- Bisping looked fit, but thin. I feel like he may be in no man's land for a weight class if 205 is too heavy and 185 is too much of a weight cut burden.
- I'd be interested in seeing Henderson rematch with Anderson Silva for the Middleweight gold and I think we'll see it in December as the co-main event for The Ultimate 2009.
- That was Henderson's first KO since February 2007 (Wanderlei Silva in PRIDE) and only Bisping's second loss, the first by KO.
Yoshihiro Akiyama def. Alan Belcher by split decision
- I thought Akiyama won this fight two rounds to one, so I'm baffled by the outcry against the decision.
- Belcher is a UFC 'tweener' - someone that is too big for the Spike TV events but doesn't have a lot of familiarity with the average fan for the PPV events. We need to know more about him.
- Akiyama certainly acclimated himself better to the cage environment than most newbies from Japan's organizations have in their debuts.
- This won Fight Of The Night honors, earning each guy $100k for their efforts.
- Debate amongst the people I watched with: Who is the person tattooed on Belcher's arm? Elvis and a Goodfellas character were among the guesses in the room.
Jon Fitch def. Paulo Thiago by unanimous decision
- I felt bad for both guys as it was tough to follow the most-hyped main event in UFC history, no matter what they did.
- This was more of a grappling exhibition than a fight.
- I thought it was interesting to hear Fitch explain how their fight got bumped back twice which threw off his preparation. That was an unenviable position for the UFC to be in.
- Despite the win, I'm not that pumped to see Fitch fight again—even if this was his 10th UFC victory. I like him, but this was kinda bland.
- With only two UFC fights and a 1-1 record in them, the jury is still out on what to make of Thiago.
The Overall Event
- No matter what they did, it was going to be tough for the UFC brass to live up to the hype. They deserve a few days off for the yeoman's work in promoting Saturday's event.
- Just me or did that crowd seem awfully quiet at spots? Respectfully observing or blood-seeking mainstreamers?
- I am VERY excited for UFC 101 and think Silva vs. Forrest Griffin is going to be great.
- From what I have read, the undercard fights were pretty entertaining. Had GSP/Alves been shorter, it would have been great to see the Jon Jones fight or the Mac Danzig/Jim Miller bloodbath.
- Did I miss the recognition of the UFC Hall of Fame inductions during the show or did this not happen? There should have been some sort of in-ring acknowledgment, even for five minutes, of Chuck Liddell and Tapout's Mask. Were they that stretched for time?
